Weird cap dump on Nashville side of thing. Like that's a lot of picks to move for a 2.5 million guy.

Too bad for your argument he’s still 35% more productive than an average second line C
- Dozzer

Forgive me for asking, but where are you getting this stat from?

I'm just doing some lazy analysis on NHL stats, but he was 38th in points for centres last year, which is great, but he's only 5 points above 45th, which according to lazy math is the average for a 2nd line centre.

And if you start slicing up the numbers different ways, it gets a little worse.

Which I was going to show you, but the NHL stats page has just crashed. Sigh.

P/GP he was 48th.

TOI/GP he's 57th, but let's dig a little deeper:

EVTOI/GP he's 38th.

PPTOI/GP he's 38th.

SHTOI/GP he's 235th.

Scoring/60, 5v5 (adding the filter of GP>40) he's 60th.

Mitch could be the biggest Richard in the world if he scores big playoff goals and contributes to deep runs or cups.

Nice guys are great, but it's not about that. I mean, yes it matters, but it's not the primary thing you want in a teammate.

Think about it from a regular Joe job routine. Let's say you work at a big busy warehouse. Lots of trucks coming and going and freight that needs to moved. You have a long shift scheduled and you can be scheduled with one of two coworkers :

1) Bill. Bill is a (frank)ing Richard of the highest order. A real buzzkill to be around, but has a high work ethic and wants to do a good job and go the (frank) home. You don't like him personally, but you respect that he knows his poop and you can count on him to carry his weight.

2) Jimmy. Jimmy is hilarious. He is the coolest dude you know. Genuinely nice guy. He's also something of a slacker and does just the minimum he can get away with. You spend half of your shift going behind him and cleaning up his messes or making sure his poop is done right. He's fun at parties and has a hot wife, but sucks to work with because he's not pulling his weight.

Which one do you wanna work with?

I don't think Bogo is lying, but I think he's being a good teammate here.

As a Leaf, 99% of those on net were right in the goalies bread basket. I have a harder shot than Blake.

Analytics (ones we see publicly) doesn't take into account where it hits the goalie or how hard the shot is

At first I was gobsmacked after watching his shot. Then came wonderment..how the (frank) did he score 40 goals the prior year?
Then came the laughter. Then came the resignation that this is as good as it’s gonna get.

To try and classify a 2nd Centre I took all of the players in the league and sorted them by faceoffs and took the top 200 guys in faceoffs and then sorted them by ice time and counted which centres on which team had the most time on ice and took the 2nd most among those remaining centres.

This left me with a list of around 30 centres - I discounted some guys who were traded mid-year (like Hertl or Mittelstadt - largely because with a change in environment, roles can change, distribution can change and so on - and I'm not doing a deep dive, just a cursory look at some data) - and basically among 2nd line centres, Tavares is 6th in points:

Leon Draisaitl makes $8.5m until 2024-25 and had 106 points
J.T. Miller makes $8m until 2029-30 and had 103 points
Mika Zibanejad makes $8.5m until 2029-30 and had 72 points
Brock Nelson makes $6m until 2024-25 and had 69 points
Evgeni Malkin makes $6.1m until 2025-26 and had 67 points
John Tavares makes $11m until 2024-25 and had 65 points
Matt Duchene makes $3m until 2024-25 and had 65 points
Charlie Coyle makes $5.25m until 2025-26 and had 60 points
Sean Monahan makes $5.5m until 2028-29 and had 59 points
Casey Mittelstadt makes $5.75m until 2026-27 and had 57 points
Chandler Stephenson makes $6.25m until 2030-31 and had 51 points
J.T. Compher makes $5.1m until 2027-28 and had 48 points
Phillip Danault makes $5.5m until 2026-27 and had 47 points
Brayden Schenn makes $6.5m until 2027-28 and had 46 points
Anthony Cirelli makes $6.25m until 2030-31 and had 45 points
Alexander Kerfoot makes $3.5m until 2024-25 and had 45 points
Mason McTavish makes $0.89m until 2024-25 and had 42 points
Sam Bennett makes $4.43m until 2024-25 and had 41 points
Morgan Frost makes $2.1m until 2024-25 and had 41 points
Marco Rossi makes $0.86m until 2024-25 and had 40 points
Ross Colton makes $4m until 2026-27 and had 40 points
Mikael Backlund makes $4.5m until 2025-26 and had 39 points
Matthew Beniers makes $0.9m but is an expired RFA and had 37 points
Erik Haula makes $3.15m until 2025-26 and had 35 points
Colton Sissons makes $2.86m until 2025-26 and had 35 points
Adam Lowry makes $3.25m until 2025-26 and had 35 points
Cole Sillinger makes $0.93m until 2023-24 and had 32 points
Jordan Staal makes $2.9m until 2026-27 and had 30 points
Evgeny Kuznetsov makes $7.8m until 2024-25 and had 24 points
Nico Sturm makes $2m until 2024-25 and had 13 points

The problem isn't his production. The problem is that - even if you discount the RFAs in the list - the average salary here is $5.3m and Tavares makes $2.5m more than anyone else on the list.

You could make a case that on a new deal JT maybe could command $5m, but given that he is going to be moving to the wing as he ages and is no longer a centre, that value should probably go down further.

So not league minimum - as was suggested

$3.5/4M - 2/3 years

I don't think anyone would complain if he were given $3.5m x 2 - that's probably an underpayment for what the open market would give him. That would handle his age 35 and 36 seasons.

Ultimately, as captain obvious as this statement is, it will depend on what he wants and how much the Leafs brass values him. I don't think they can afford to go much over $4m and enact meaningful change around that core.

He's getting Giroux's contract. Unless he takes a pajama's discount (and some people in Ottawa thought Giroux took a pajama discount).

$4M seems reasonable with cap going up. He can still contribute as a 3C or on wing and on PP - pace is slow and steady on special teams. Your 3rd line is typically defensively sound and he can play with guys (style wise) like Jarnkrok and add some offence…you also gotta think how long he’s played and the role he’s served. He’s been offensively focused but he’s super smart player who I’m sure can simplify his game as a winger and play better defensively.
