Struble for Matthews and a 2nd in 2026 - Symba007
Wow.
Since when do WE have to give a 2nd round pick in these trades?

man Davis Schneider has turned into the player you would expect from someone you never heard over 18 months ago

Major slump for him. Had a great 2 months of this season and then all downhill from there. |

Looks like the oilers do not match and acquire Fischer and a 2028 3rd from St louis in another trade |

It's going to be interesting for sure. Still blown away how cheap they got this ugly mf. - systemtool
With zero retention, the price is fairly reasonable. Not a lot of teams had the cap space to take on his contract.

Yup, Habs were in perfect position to take that gamble.
Worst case scenario, he ends up being injured again and we lost a decent young defenseman on the left side, which we have more than enough of.
The best case scenario of Laine going back to his best self is well worth the risk.
The fact he only has 2 years left on his contract is also a big factor here.... doubt the Habs would have done the same if he had 4 years or more left.

Is this secondary trade a "sorry we kinda forced your hand" or a "hey, don't match and we'll throw in this sweetener?"
Discuss.

When he's on, he's a point a game player.
That's an easy gamble to make, if you have the cap space. |

No doubt, but hopefully it fails spectacularly - Whipper
I think that's the beauty of it.
Even if it did. The Habs still ended up trading a bottom pairing guy for what will likely be a early 2nd.
It's a no lose situation really.

I think that's the beauty of it.
Laine could absolutely flame out, instilling horrible habits in all the young players and ruining their careers. Then, this bottom pairing guy could bloom into the D version of Martin St. Louis

but it needs more work as Vatrano's cap hit 3.6M and the Leafs don't that much space left.

Retention.
And I think Jarnkrok or Kampf gets traded before the season starts.
I also see Vegas is 3.5M over the cap. Something has to give there.
Wonder if they can pry Roy out of there.
Trade away Robertson and Kampf for picks. |

Leafs have plenty of picks in 2027 or 28 but yeah they don't have much in the upcoming drafts to part with |

I mean they drafted in the 1st round last draft.
They have their 2nd and a 1st in 2026…not saying they will use it now but if they want to add a big player this season they can and would depending on how they feel about their team when the time comes. |

Both have N-MTC with no trade to team so this could be difficult to do.

Does this include Lehner 5M LTIR?

there are options out there but will require some smart maneuvering by Tre and the gang |
