Just going to add two additional thoughts:
- it's hard to evaluate the Leafs' scouting, when we have given away so many high picks over the years.
- Is the scouting bad or the player development bad? Probably a little from column A, a little from column B... - Atomic Wedgie
I think there's a fair bit of column A and B as well. Now I am enthused to some extent by the way they snagged 2nd round talent (love him or hate him, Robertson probably ranks out about 25th in a re-do of the 2019 draft) and Knies was certainly an excellent pick for being the 57th overall - he is probably also around a top-20 pick right now. They need more hits, though. That 2020 draft looks barren and while I like the skillset for Hirvonen or Niemela, I'm not sure the current NHL environment is going to see success for either of them. Even if Minten, Cowan and the kid - Danford - exceed their draft position, we still need additional hits in there to keep supplementing the core as it ages or providing value to us that we can use to supplement the core.
Being patient is one thing, but once your players are at their prime, time isn't really your friend anymore.

It's not a perfect formula, but using Hockey Reference's point share value (divided by GP), if you filter for players who have played 82+ games, Robertson ranks 17th overall.

If he was smart, he signs a deal with the Leafs who are desperate for a scoring LW and those numbers continue to increase.

I have no problem with using PS as a solid reference. It's biggest drawback is that it's not particularly effective at measuring defense (as are most models) and it over-rewards goalies. But it's not too far away from a WAR valuation and even more closely to The Athletic's gamescore model.
