800K cap hit, that's why
Patch would not be playing in the top 6 me thinks

- dmnted

That's not even remotely close to a good enough reason.

Dude averages almost 2/3rds of his starts in the oZone. If he's not being brought in as a Top 6 winger, he doesn't belong on the team.

Tree's free agent judgement is very questionable so far (even prior to the leafs)
Patch is not the type of player the leafs need, enough with the old guys...bring in some youth.
The leafs seemed to have gotten a fairly old team relatively quickly, I believe they are 7th oldest. (now yes I understand 29.whatever is still young in the grand scheme of things. Im mid to late 40's.)

- Fakepartofme

The team needs more speed and grit. Hoping this is something Berube is keen on.

They would be paying the same to a Marlie though and getting to see what they have in that player whom they presumably drafted and developed or at the very least traded for and have invested some development into.

I'm in agreement with using your own youth > an injury prone vet who hasn't been the very good player he once was in a long time approach.

What a horrific tragedy for the Gaudreaus. A family torn apart in a way that will impact them for generations. Awful.

I don't want to even imagine what the sister is feeling right now.

Probably some incredibly misplaced guilt.

Suspected drunk driver Sean Higgins charged with killing #CBJ star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew last night in New Jersey. The brothers were there for their sister's wedding that was set for today.

From the eve of a wedding to a double funeral, it's unfathomable.

On a much, much lighter note, it appears our polar bear mascot doesn't know how to swim:

What an ugly (frank)ing sack of poop ...rot in hell Sean.

That being said ...cycling busy rural roads after sunset is never a great idea. I bike a lot and after a few close encounters I make sure I'm off the road while the suns' still up.

I ride with lights that are as bright as car lights, and I use those lights at all times, including as daytime running lights. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately from reports it sounds like this guy would've hit them even if it was broad daylight.

So according to stuff I’m reading, the piece of poop passed car A on the left. Car B was in front of car A, and had pulled into the middle of the road to give the Gaudreau brothers a little breathing room, as they were riding on the shoulder.

Idiot decided to pass the car on the right shoulder, hitting both brothers.

I sincerely doubt helmets would have made any difference.

I used to run to and from work carrying a referee’s whistle.

It was the only way to get the attention of drivers looking left while turning right.

It’s amazing how there are so many bad drivers out there.

Yep, whistles and loud air horns are increasingly a thing for cyclists. Or just screaming.

It's amazing the number of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians that just don't check where they are going at all.

Florida drivers are notoriously bad. Lots of transplants with different driving styles, lots of tourists who have no idea where they are going or which side of the road to drive on. Throw in meth heads and drunk rednecks on top.

Tons of hit and runs. Being a cyclist or pedestrian down here is universally perilous.

I know you and some others here are avid cyclists.

I hate to read or hear about anyone on a bike being hit, it immediately causes me to flash back to being a kid and the guy who lived in one of the 1st floor apartments in our 3 level / 9 unit apt building on Lakeshore Ave in Toronto being hit by a dump truck and dragged over 1000 feet leaving him a quadriplegic.

He was an incredible person who I remember being so awesome to all the kids in our neighborhood and he was also one of Canada's greatest cyclists.

thanks for sharing.

Here is the report I found on X

Local station, WPVI, confirmed what happened . The Gaudreaus were riding bikes on Country Route 551 in Oldmans - which is like farmland, so not much in the way of lighting or room beyond the road - on the side of the road. A Jeep was behind a sedan and a SUV. The Jeep passed the sedan but the SUV moved to the middle of the road since they saw the bikers. The Jeep then decided to pass the SUV on the right and hit the bikers from behind. The deaths were from the injuries from the hit. The driver was found under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by automobile.

He was the guest speaker at one of my high school athletic banquets.

Good memories.
