I know you and some others here are avid cyclists.

I hate to read or hear about anyone on a bike being hit, it immediately causes me to flash back to being a kid and the guy who lived in one of the 1st floor apartments in our 3 level / 9 unit apt building on Lakeshore Ave in Toronto being hit by a dump truck and dragged over 1000 feet leaving him a quadriplegic.

He was an incredible person who I remember being so awesome to all the kids in our neighborhood and he was also one of Canada's greatest cyclists.

Not that is an excuse, but I can see why it happens in downtown Toronto. Between the mass of pedestrians, the mass amount cards, pedestrians cross late or against lights, cars running yellow or even red lights, and a number of cyclists - who do just sort of appear at a high rate of speed from "out of nowhere" behind cars in the right lane, turning left in Toronto is a bloody nightmare.

I never liked driving and still don't. I got my license when I was 37 because my wife was pregnant and someone had to get her to the hospital. It's been 17 years but I still won't drive in downtown Toronto - it's just pure chaos to me.

Not that is an excuse, but I can see why it happens in downtown Toronto. Between the mass of pedestrians, the mass amount cards, pedestrians cross late or against lights, cars running yellow or even red lights, and a number of cyclists - who do just sort of appear at a high rate of speed from "out of nowhere" behind cars in the right lane, turning left in Toronto is a bloody nightmare.

I saw it today; a driver ran a red light in a construction zone and almost hit one of the guys working

I don't drive in downtown Toronto, because public transit, running and biking are all much faster.

And don't even franking get me started on the price of parking.

To this day I remember the video in driver's ed class that demonstrated how frequent passing does not gain you any significant time on your trip but increases the collision risks dramatically. Ditto for the physics around braking distance at speed and space buffers between vehicles.

And it's "free" time.

I used to take 40 minutes to get home by transit. Then go out running for an hour.

Then I started running home - would take a longer route that was 70 minutes.

So a 70 minute workout, and 30 extra minutes of free time!!!

so true. I love the drivers who weave back and forth in stop and go traffic to jump into the "faster lane", and you end up right beside them 5 miles down the road.

He was the guest speaker at one of my high school athletic banquets.

I remember him being incredibly funny, friendly and I was crushed when the accident happened. He went through a very dark time where he was very angry at what happened to him (understandably so) but got past that and became a champion for cures for spinal cord injuries because champions champion things. :-)
