Almost certainly it would be separate. It would be treated like a different player contract. The contracts could not bleed into each other. However, an implicit handshake agreement is always possible. 😉

The latter is highly unlikely.

I have no idea. I am just happy to have a new subject to discuss.

Players would def want $ to be as front loaded as possible, because of PV reasons. There is nothing in it for the player monetarily to defer $.

Jarvis just took a clear hometown discount.

Definitely more favorable to upfront money but I disagree that there is nothing in it for the player to defer money. There is potential tax savings in certain situations as well as it can act as a future savings account that they can't spend for the future.

It's true that with the cost of living increases, etc it won't be worth as much as today. It will be worth more in the future then not having it if it is spent.

As Stephen Hawking once said, we need to eliminate aggression*, which is a completely vestigial, redundant trait in modern society and is clinging on like the appendix. Not happening any time soon that, but in the meantime I am more hopefully about AI tools curbing thenature of the ilk of that driver.
Btw, I would thought you Canadians are much better in this sort of thing. Et tu? Hmm, hmmm.

A few weeks ago, just a few blocks from where I live: https://6abc.com/post/bar...s-conference-da/15092037/

*EDIT: He also said we cannot wait for evolution to do it for us. Evolution is too slow.

I imagine being trapped in a body like Hawking’s would change how you view aggression. Hockey and football sure wouldn’t be much fun without it. He’s probably right though.

A really interesting recent example of this is Ohtani's contract for the Dodgers. He makes 2M a year and then in 2034 he get's paid 68M per year until 2043.

He probably will retire by then, and his comp counts as non-qualified deferred retirement income which is not taxable (by the state). If he moves back to Japan, he will avoid IRS.

Nope. Just put the money in a pretax (non-Roth) IRA. It will garner returns, rather than just sit there deferred.

The biggest threat to Trump after the Swifties and the NFL are the Republicans themselves. Many are simply sick of his sorry ass. He is considered an embarrassment to the Republican party by many republicans. Thanks!

From Bob McKenzie

https://www.reddit.com/r/..._keep_an_eye_on_today_is/

McKenzie] Something to keep an eye on today is whether some NHL teams structure deals with “deferred compensation.” I’ve heard there’s been a lot more talk of it this year. It’s a legal (within the NHL CBA) maneuver that can be used ostensibly to help a player with tax considerations

While that may be true for regular folks, when you are earning well over what you need to live comfortably you gain access to investment types that outperform that strategy.

The top 10 Flyers prospects according to The Hockey News... Michkov, Luchanko, Bonk, Andrae, Tuomaala, Berglund, Gill, Kolosov, Bjarnason and Zavragin. Andrae needs to make the team out of camp this year! I also saw the rumor about Laine and there is nothing to back it up. Some nobody says it and everyone wants to believe it. Just click bait and more Torts hate. Laine only played under Torts for a very brief time. LMAO!

It wasn't Tortorella hate, although certainly if it was the Flyers and we don't know that it was, not wanting to play for Tortorella could've been the reason. If I was Laine and the type of player he is, I wouldn't want to play for Tortorella either. It wasn't nobodies that sad that Laine nixed a deal with another team. It was from a legit source.

I just don't see how this happens. The only path would be for him to beat out Zamula.

Maybe I don't understand what you are saying. The NHL I am sure has a 401k plan. Not only would your income accrue the returns I spoke of, there must be some matching.

I would think that Jarvis is forgoing the returns, as well as the matching (and the returns on that matching).

It is correct that the fact that he nixed a trade to another team is legit, but there are no facts to back up that the Flyers were the team. I agree, if I was a lazy player like Laine I wouldn't want to play for Torts either.

I am pretty sure you know more about this than I do. So correct a little confusion for me, if you care.

The non-qualified deferred retirement income avoidance of state tax scenario described in the article: if you read it, you can see California saying they are likely to object. And I would think, such objection would have very solid ground to be legally sustained.

Taxation is based on the calendar year and location the work was performed. If you are doing work in year x in state y, you are supposed to be paying taxes according to what regulations were in state y in year x, irrespective of how much later you actually received the money or where you received the money.

What am I missing?

Agreed. The issue is with this team, barring injury there is only one available defensive slot for a young player. With Zamula having the edge. When there should be two.

What I am saying is that if they deferred 3.2 million. In 9 years it will still be 3.2 million. They cant put it in some investment account so that it accrues interest and is worth more in 9 years. (I hope I am explaining myself right)

I guess I didn't look into that deeply. I think the Flyers were expecting him to make the team out of camp last year. Was hoping he could be the next Kimmo, but I guess that is just a mirage at this point.

I guess technically he did make the team out of camp last year over York. I don't see that happening again.

What I don't want to happen is for any of the young players to be a 7th D/part time player. That is what EJ is for. I would rather they be getting big minutes in Lehigh.

Doesn't this strenthen my point? You get access to those investment vehicles by getting the money now.

The top marginal tax rate is 36%. Carolina has a rate of 4.5% income tax.

If you receive 1 m in Carolina today, and pay a tax of 400k approx. You get 600k. Just invest it in an index fund. You need only a 4.5% roi yearly for 8 years to recover the 1 million back in year 9 AND you have already paid your taxes.

I don't see how there could be tax savings except for the change of domicile issue relevant to the Ohtani case maybe.

Deferred contract money overwhelmingly favors the team versus the player and the limited opportunities for benefit to the player. It's why it rarely happens in contracts.
