I'm big on Timmins too. Hopefully, they can keep him around because the Leafs are almost certainly going to run into injury issues on the back end.
- Whipper

I don’t feel like looking up the NHL D to start last season but it was pretty rough and the leafs also ran into D injuries.

They are set up a lot better this time around and they have Marshal Rifai who looked good and can fill in in a pinch.

They signed him to 2 years 750K 1 way for a reason…unlikely any team picks that contract up.

They are pretty set on D and in a good position for injuries.

Timmins didnt look good last season and will cost 1.1M…he may not get picked up.

Lol you lost me as soon as you said a guy being re-signed to a 2 year deal on June 30th means nothing along with him not 'fitting the GM's style' - that GM is the one who re-singed him FFS.

I'm not even a big Lilly fan (he had a terrible playoff) but I've also read several projected d pairings for the Leafs this year that have him in the 4 spot.

You don't like the player and that's fine and you want him gone, that's fine too but when you go down the road of "people need to stop thinking X, Y or Z" because it's not how or what you think it makes having a meaningful discussion or exchange of opinions impossible.

Changes are coming regardless that much we can agree on.

I'll just bow out of this conversation vs it spiral - agree to disagree and we will see how it plays out.

Have a good day.

- Cush29

Yup, I do not agree that minor contracts given without any NTC are safe to stay with the team no matter when they signed.

Cheers.

Treliving has said multiple times you need 8 or 9 NHL D for playoffs.

Like it or not it’s how he builds his teams. They likely will lose Timmins(hope he passes through waivers) and then they have 7.

There’s no chance they trade any D away.

The math is pretty obvious to me…it’s timmins through waivers and then Robertson traded.

Unlike a lot of you guys I won’t pretend to know.

The biggest individual part of Gary's job is managing the egos of 30 billionaires and trying to get them to cooperate.

He still has his job because he is incredibly effective at shielding the team owners from their own worst impulses.

- BINGO!

I'm not 100% on that - I think he is more of a glorified yes man the majority of the time for them and occasionally the voice of reason that they listen to (or ignore).

The biggest impulse these jokers have is simply to make as much money as possible IMO, I think he is a bit of a check point or litmus test for them.

This is a joke but also not far from what i think the types of conversations may actually be :

BOG - "Hey Gary we want to do this to make more $ what do you think? Will it Fly?"

Gary B - "Well guys great idea, very out of the box and I can see the value add but I don't think if you remove armrests on 50% of the seats in the rink to squeeze in more seats AND charge a premium for the 'exclusive seats WITH arm rests' the fans will accept it and they may stop coming to the rink and that ends up as a net loss"

the jays traded Rowdy Tellez for Trevor Richards and Francis.
Tellez has been very meh, basically a replacement level hitter 100 ops+ since he left.

but this tweet from a month ago explains some of the changes

https://x.com/mike_petrie...tatus/1823439859433816194

Bowden Francis is making some interesting changes. Last year, it was just 4sm/slider/curve, except now the curveball keeps getting mashed, so there's more and more splitter, and looks like a little sinker coming out last night.

15/1 K/BB and 3 ER in 12.1 IP this month

The biggest question is who steps in as the defensive guy on pairing one when he’s out? Will it be Rielly with someone like OEL beside him?

Agree with this ^ but in defense of Timmins (no pun intended) he has only been given a sliver of the opportunity Lilly has in Toronto to prove his worth. It probably doesn't matter and the Leafs developed Lilly so they are likley more sweet on him over Timmins but I do feel like Timmins will end up as a 4/5 D man at least somewhere and the Leafs may have sellers remorse but it is what it is.
- Cush29

I think I might have deleted this part of my response but I agree with you about Timmins. I am a fan of the way he plays. He closes gaps well, has a smart stick, skates well and makes a good outlet pass.

He was prone to unusual flubs with the puck which may have sort of been nerves - like overskating it or just missing it, which is pretty unusual for an NHL defenseman to do as often as he did.

There are elements of Timmins' game that are similar to Brodie's - give him time and he has the raw skills to be a top-4 guy in my opinion - but he would still need a physical partner to provide that missing element of his game.

OEL's signing killed Timmin's entire purpose.
- AdamFrench

Timmins isn't better offensively, but he is better defensively. You're not wrong in that you can only have so many defensemen of a certain type and Liljegren, Rielly, OEL, Timmins . . . and down into the system with guys like Niemela, Rifai, Kokkonen and so on - there are plenty of them.

I know you'll have numbers to the contrary because you're the king of numbers, but I refuse to believe that even now in his dotage that OEL is not as good defensively as Timmins. At the very least his skating and decision making should make up for Timmin's lack thereof which are his worst traits.
