Despite being only 22, he has played 147 games averaging nearly 20 min/game so i don't think it's fair to say he hasn't played a lot of games. That's nearly 2900 minutes of ice time in the NHL.

Not saying he should be a finished product but he's been playing in the deep end for 4 years and the only reason he doesn't have more games played is his propensity for significant injuries. Not to mention he's been practicing against NHL dmen and coached by NHL coaches those 4 years. Also, the way ANH plays defense is different than the way PHI plays defense which probably has an impact but since systems don't matter that won't be mentioned.

147 NHL games in 5 season is not a lot. That is an average of 30 games a season. Lets not forget how Covid effected his playing time before the NHL. He should have gone to the AHL to develop a bit but he was thrown into the NHL. He was eventually sent to the AHL.

Some will still blame Torts.

Tony D could put up points but is +/- was not good and he loved to be in the penalty box.

I don't think Hayes liked being called out by Torts and did the Quiet Quit thing. It jut seemed when January of 23 hit he just didn't seemed to be motivated

Torts is a horrible talent evaluator. With Tony he discovered that the analytics were correct and that his gut was wrong. He should not get a pass with anything TDA related. He essentially got TDA hired and then fired him. Torts is the one who convinced himself that TDA was somebody that he wasn't.

147 in 4 years. 49 games/season and that AHL time 14 games 4 years ago.

Not saying he wasn't put in the NHL to early but he did play 81 games at 20 min/game 3 years ago. He's not some AHL call up getting his 1st shot at the big club. He's been with the big club 4 years and getting top minutes.

If he's healthy he should only improve but he's had plenty of opportunity at his young age.

Hayes in January is in the midst of a career offensive season. Then Tortorella gets a hard on for him and demoted him in ice time and down in lines. His production went south. That's quitting?
- MJL

will also add that torts knew he wanted him gone at that time. torts just couldn't do the right thing and leave him in the top 6 keep that career year going. all about his ego.

would they have had to eat half the contract and get only a 6th if he did that?

Blame can go both ways. most on torts in this case.

He was never in the running to earn one.

That being said he has not exactly stepped up and made their decision hard. He is a bottom pair dman a best. He was ok to me. Some good some bad. He may be in line for a call up if injuries to the left side.

I would imagine if he didn the would have made his opinion well known. tells me he was on board at the least. torts had him on the top d pair and on the pk.

He looked like a viable 7th or 1st call up D guy last year. This preseason i am afraid he played his way out of consideration like Attard.

They don't call a clear high stick, but they call a phantom boarding?

Not even close to the danger zone and I didn't even see a push, just incidental contact

Forgot what a slog the Flyers are to watch. They can't gain and hold on to the puck. Chasing the game constantly. When they actually do breakout somewhat cleanly it ends up with a dump and chase or broken up at the blue line play.
