I don't have a problem with them thinking he needs another year. My issue is Joker + Clifton fit poorly in this group and Byram is redundant. Group just isn't put together well and another finesse, puck money LD is a tough fit.

Is it likely the Byram trade was due to not wanting to pay another forward due to the internal team cap at least for the upcoming season, and deciding to kick the can down the road at least one more season to save money?

As I'm sure you agree with, until their approach to each season changes, it'll never happen.

Seems fairly clear that they are an internal cap budget team who's roster build philosophy is to put together a team that hopefully squeaks into the playoffs.
