I agree with the premise here, but only because of the hard cap. The salary cap is a lousy current reality which leads to many players being underpaid and some overpaid. For example, JT is a useful player, but relative to Marner's production, he is overpaid. The ghost of Zack Parise and Ryan Suter will cost the Minnesota Wild over $14M in cap space this season, that's probably the worst overpayment in the league. McDavid, MacKinnon and Matthews in a cap league, will likely always be underpaid. The trick in this false economy is not to have too many overpaid players that produce very little.

Until matthews leads the leafs in the playoffs to something beyond 1 win in the 2nd round, he is simply not underpaid

Players and teams don't win in the playoffs until they do. Many of the all time greats in hockey won few cups. Being injury free and luck are two factors. Orr, perhaps the greatest defenseman in NHL history, won two cups.

Matthews has been the best pure goal scorer in the NHL since entering the league. He can stickhandle in a phone booth. He is very good defensively. There are 116 players in the NBA (soft cap) that make more than $14M a year. About 102 current MLB (luxury tax) players make $14M or more a season. Matthews is underpaid.

I'm not sure. Right now - you have
MacKinnon making $12.6m in the 2nd year of his deal;
Matthews making $13.25m in the 1st year of his deal;
McDavid making $12.5m in the 7th year of his deal;
Draisaitl a year away from making $14m

Those are the only players making more than $12.5m and each of them have won a Hart trophy in the last 5 years. I like Marner but he's never received better than a 4th place vote in Hart voting by contrast. He is presently overpaid which puts him in this conversation, but he shouldn't BE in the conversation for a salary that high.

He's an excellent player - but he should probably have Willy's $11.5m at most (and that would even be high) and Willy should have Marner's present $10.9m at most.

All true unless there is one GM with lots of money who needs a marquee player to generate some buzz and get their team closer to or into playoff spot. My guess is that there are more than one. Paying big for a guy like Marner isn’t necessarily stupid for a team like Utah.

Hes not.
The nhl's economics dont even come close to those other leagues. With an 87million cap, matthews isnt underpaid at all.
Sure he scores alot in the reg season, great. Fun to watch.
Carry the team to the 3rd/4th round a few times.
I agree nhl'ers may be underpaid compared to other sports.....but the other sport simply make so much more money.
And i would also suggest that athletes in other sports may be overpaid.... but if the money is there....then pay them.

We are not talking a few mediocre NBA players or MLB players making more than McDavid! Over a hundred in each league. According to Forbes, the Leafs team is worth about $2.8B. That would put them tied for 8th place with the Atlanta Braves in MLB. George Springer makes almost twice as much as McDavid. (Jays are worth $2.1B)

Meanwhile back at Gary's bullpoop salary cap league Alex Meruelo just pocketed $1B for selling the Coyotes (he paid $425M). He mooched off the NHL and other teams for years and walked away with a super lottery win. And that's why the NHL should have an $87M cap? Frankly, wouldn't that half billion look better in the hands of the players than that slimy douchebag?
