This is complete nonsense. I am frankly sick of these personal attacks on Torts, like he is just some archaic coach that wants to screw with athelete's heads. Couts is playing lower in the lineup because that is what he is now. Couts was never a fast player, but in the modern game that is younger and faster, Couts cant keep up. Just watch the game last night. How many chances did Couts have to score and how many times did he whiff on the play, I recall at least 3 such chances. Look I love Couts and I had really hoped he would recover from his back surgeries and be the player he was, but its clear to me that he will never be more than a 3rd line player for this team. Hathaway is a very different player than Couts and has a very different role on the team. Hathaway is a very good NHL pro and a solid bottom 6 forward for this team. He is not the problem by a long shot. Moving Laughton up in the lineup was a response to his good game against Seattle where clearly he was keeping up with the play and generating offense. At the end of the day it all comes back to the same problem for the Flyers up front. They lack good players at the center position and this is killing them in terms of playmaking, puck possession, power play and defensive coverage. Moving Luchanko back to juniors and inserting Noah Cates into the lineup will not change anything, in fact it might make it worse, but it may be the best thing for Luchanko in the long run which is what Briere has stated he cares about the most.

Starting this year and going into next year.

I just don't see the Flyers finding a buyer for Coots, but throwing him on the 4th is an absolute trash move. I'm sure Torts doesn't care what anyone is paid, but Coots can only get worse by doing that, not better. Still got 5-6 years at a huge cap to do that.

So I still think Coots could have a tremendous role on the 3rd with less pressure to produce offensively and still lead.

I think the Flyers are putting too many eggs in one basket trying to have an all deep team. They draft a legit 1C and it allows the team to trade some of the overflow they have at wing.

I'd rather see a top line you can count on every night, depth scoring on the 2nd and fill ins for the bottom 6 then having 3 deep lines that are inconsistent night in and night out.

I have never been an outright supporter, but I still believe Tort's toughness on work ethics, conditioning and skating was needed for the Flyers team....

The problem is once you get past that everything else is downhill.

The Flyers need to tank more than any year in the history of their franchise right now and replace every damn coach for next year.

- Glak18

I've repeatedly said that Tortorella is nothing more than a highly paid interim head coach. He did the basic things that Yeo should've done. But he was incompetent.

There are strong opinions on Torts, and disagreement on my thoughts, no issue.

Assuming year 3 continues on the same trajectory so far this season and the end of last season, what would value would he add to return to year 4? How long does it take the footers in place? Another year of roster evaluation to see who can play or not? Maybe Torts is just cover for Briere's unwillingness to make tough decisions on roster building. Hayes was percieved as lazy, and teammates hated Provy. Bill Gauthier rejected the Flyers. Walker was a UFA- so I guess there was a somewhat tough decision to make. Seeler and Hathaway try hard guys. Tippett and TK extensions-keeping status quo.
The organization seems married to a roster that is not overly talented and looks the effort for 5 on 5 is starting to drop. Is Torts gonna turn that effort around soon- we'll see. Kudos to Rocky actually saving the ship, can we imagine how bad the start would look like with last year's PP. Absolutely send Jett down. Getting another top 7 in this year's draft should be priority - if that makes me a bad fan, so be it.

I’m on record as saying on this site that I think Tippett had the potential to be a 40 goal scorer. I need to add a caveat to that:

Tippett could be a 40 goal scorer if…
He could actually bury his chances by putting the puck in the net and not off the post, off the boards and glass behind the net, or hitting the goalie in the logo. Needless to say, I’m coming around to the realization that he just isn’t a goal scorer like that. Volume got him near 30 and perhaps 30 is the absolute max we can hope for if all the stars align perfectly.

Flyers are desperate for a center and a finisher or two, oh and a legit top pairing D, and some size. Hopefully MM39 has a good rookie year and develops well. This year will be positive if Foereater, Frost, York and Drysdale take that “next step”.

- mikeyo27

No offense but there was never any indication that Tippett had 40 goal potential. A top center might elevate him to be a consistent 30 goal scorer, but that's about it. There just aren't enough elements to his goal scoring repetoire.

"If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts; if you have the law on your side, pound the law; if you have neither the facts nor the law, pound the table."

The Flyers have been pounding the table ever since Torts got here, facts and long term plan be damned and people have been buying it.

The coach really doesn’t owe the Captain anything. He is not playing well. If you want to say he is singling him out then maybe that is a valid argument.

I wonder if/when he healthy scratches him then what the fallout ends up being.

The lack of center depth is very apparent. Yes stop treating coots like a bum. Have to work with what we have for now and I think that would be the most effective lineup for what we have. Farabee frost and Michkov all play the cycle game well and Farabee and Michkov are decent forecheckers. Coots tip and TK can also be a decent line, give coots some wingers and try to get him moving a little

Yes, that's why it's more cost effective to pay 50% of his salary and send him packing, thus the second part of my post. A buyout saves you less than a million a year after the first year, if I remember correctly. It's just painful to watch him play now, he's a shadow of his former self. Maybe get him to go on LTIR for the rest of his career is the best option?

Your posts suggest that you don't. Not aware of his signing bonus situation which makes it buyout proof. There there is the comment of "just get him to go on LTIR"

You can stick your head in the sand all you want. That's exactly what Tortorella is. An archaic out to pasture coach whom the game has passed by. His bag of tricks, and its a very limited bag, has played out. He is slowly but surely losing this team. You're always the last to realize that the sun came up today. Couturier's issue is not skating and keeping up with the play. He's never been more than an average skater at best.

Still doesn’t fix his main problem, he has no conception of how to use his teammates.

You're right, he doesn't but he can still score and he will score. Honestly, he's getting scoring chances when a lot of other players aren't. The goals will come .

If they want him removed off the roster at some point it is an option.
