Discount this Leafs team at your own risk.

They chased one of the best goalies in the league.

True test will be tonight.
Playing the 2nd game of a b2b against a bad team.
Lets see if Berube can have them start on time again.

Good game last night. The team looks different, just hope tanev and oel are injured soon.

Is he still a top 5 goalie? Really bad form last night, hasnt been top 10 in stats in the past two years.
Im sure he could still turn it on...but

Goalies are weird that way. I think of Price. He has some incredible seasons, some vey average ones, and a couple of stinkers. Although he was always able to turn it on in the playoffs regardless of the season he had.

He has the ability to steal a game or even a series. He can be an absolute star, of course - but to your point, since the start of the 2022 season, amongst the 55 goalies who have played at least 50 games Vasilevskiy is very middle of the pack - ranked 22nd in Goals Saved Above Expected per 60.

The thing that really gets me is Vasi's lack of consistency over the past few years. Like when you look at the top goalies, they carry a quality start percentage over 60% - Hellebuyck, Luukonen and Ullmark all carried a 66.7% QS% last year to lead the way among legitimate starters (Broissoit had 73% and Stolarz had 71% and Montembeault had 70% amongst goalies with enough starts to be statistically relevant, but not really that more than 40 starts area - and really Montembeault did have 1 more start that Ullmark, so I'm drawing unfair lines in those comparisons).

The year prior the leaders were guys like Ullmark (90%), Sorokin (70%), Hellebuyck (69%) and surprisingly Samsonov (68%); you found Vasilevskiy at 59% - slightly above average at 12th out of 26 starters with 40 or more starts.

In 2021 he was 8th out of 31 with a QS% of 62%.

So there is definitely some skating on reputation going on here. But Bob was doing the same thing and then suddenly exploded back into Bob last year, so I'm not writing the guy off at just 30!

Maybe he is toast as a top-5...maybe he's as toast as Bob was and written off the first year of his insane deal and about to get lapped? Who knows. I wouldn't be against him personally.

Stolarz was a guy I had hoped/expected to be quality this year as a back up...but early days and all...holy (frank). He's playing better than I've seen a Leafs goalie since like Cujo (not that hard to be fair). Even when Campbell had his amazing run, he was making scary saves and ones you can't believe. Stolarz is just sitting still like a wall So weird to see.

Raps fans.
Saw a vid of Paul george saying he was close to being traded to toronto when kawhi was close to resigning in Toronto.
But the clippers put a better trade package together which then changed kawhi mind to sign with the clippers.
Could have been a dynasty if true

As happy as I was to see the Leafs chase Vasi last night I would definitely not write him off, he's way too talented.

Maybe he hasn't fully recovered from that back surgery that kept him out to start the season last year?

The one thing that scares me about Stolarz right now is there seems to be a lot of pucks left on his front door step.

So far he's managed to smother them, but I fear that as time wears on, he's going to be victim to a lot of goal mouth scrambles, and garbage goals on 2nd and 3rd chances.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

His style reminds me a lot of how Hellebuyck tends the net. He uses good positioning coupled with his size and and honestly a tightness of poise to stop pucks from getting through. Watch Helly in goalmouth scrambles and he's upright - so he's big - his pads are extended so he's covering the net bottom and his stick is actively closing the gap between his pads. You rugby a puck up to the crease and you could bang it all day long at Helly and it's not getting past him. Stolarz has a very similar poise and positional style that utilizes his size to great effect.

Will he get victimized on loose pucks in front? Sure. But a collapsing defense to the net front and pushing people out of the way probably helps utilize his size and style to even better effect.

Keefe loved making changes to the 3rd pair and 4th lines on back to backs. Even when it was completely unnecessary.

Wonder what Berube does.

Was looking through stats this morning and saw the pens were 1st in the league in expected goals for...They can score

Easy one here, pick Woll.

So Hildeby showed well in his first NHL game.

Ahktyamov has started the year on fire in the AHL.

With Woll back and Hildeby back down...what are the odds Dubas trades for Murr dog?

Pens have gotten terrible goaltending, Murray was good in his last AHL start and the crease is crowded there.

yeah, I was thinking Woll as well. Pens scoring in bunches, but not sure if Woll's first start will be shaky and Columbus hasn't had issues scoring either.

Woll it is though, if he gets activated today

In years past this is the type of game where the leafs start out flat, go down 2-0 and come back to win 4-3.

I am hoping with the way Berube has been able to get them to play a certain way consistently, thats not an issue here.

Still a W is likely here for Woll and I can see the leafs playing well in front of him against a bad team.

The Leafs just came off a big win, then hopped on a plane to go play the team that everyone is picking to finish dead last.

I love my Leafs, but I'm betting the farm they lose tonight. Bigly.
