Probably not but why retain salary? Trade him for a broken stick, a roll of tape and a power bar.
Unless … KD is thinking of an offer sheet? - paulr
Maybe it's where Hall wanted to go? KD got what he could, we all know how the Canes value draft picks. |

In another article Bamford quoted Elliot Friedman as saying,
"The Blackhawks brokered this deal. If Rantanen does hit the market this summer, it wouldn’t be a stunner to see them make a run at him."

The Hockey News absolutely fried KFC on the Hall trade. Trading just Hall should have netted them a third. Retaining money should have bumped it up to a second, according to Hockey News. I have to agree. KFC is not great when it comes to trades. - bjphawkfan
A very early 3rd (chicago's pick) and a 2nd (from a contender) are very nearly the same value in terms of where you pick. |

First of all I expect Carolina will re-sign him.
Second if they dont, I expect he’ll want to play for a contender.
Unless they overpay I can’t see the Hawks getting him. And if they overpay do they risk upsetting their cap budget going forward.
It would be funny if Colorado were toner-sign him.

Possible but so far KD’s record of trading for active players isn’t impressive. |

That's the rub, what contender is going to have $14 mil available? |

Is it a good idea for a team that has most of its prospects two to three years away from making the team taking a run at a 29 year old for seven years? |

The Cap just took its first decent jump in a while and if it goes up to what some think it will this offseason (low to mid 90's) it shouldn't be an issue. I know, fool me once and all but it seems like things are trending in a decent direction where the Cap is concerned vs the stagnation that hamstrung the Hawks last time they were competitive.
Also, it's sounding like there may be a market for Jones so if you get rid of Jones in addition to Cap increases, would seem doable without hindering them from signing their own guys. I'm terrible at math though so what do I know. |

Is Rantanen really 29 I kinda hoped we may take a run at him FA style like when we went after Hoss .Who is this Juntorp kid we also apparently gave up for nothing /Really I have my doubts about our GM and that's not like me |

Yeah...I'm going to go ahead and disagree. KFC hasn't actually made one of those trades yet. The only players he traded for were the now departed Hall, Mrazek, Fliggy, Mikey and D!ckie.
All of those trades were about not just getting the player but in most cases an asset in the form of a draft pick to help the other team out of Cap trouble. |

Rantanen will be 29 on Oct 29. Juntorp was a 6th rounder in KFC's first crop of picks in '22. |

If they can trade Jones without retaining too much maybe MR is a viable pickup but it could be an absolute disaster having both in the lineup basically taking up $20M plus in cap space. But what concerns me is this team isn’t remotely close to being a playoff contender and the top prospects are a few years away from even making the team let alone contributing. Personally I think adding a free agent like Rantanen is better as a last piece of the puzzle instead of an earlier piece.
Speaking of Jones, last night the team played one of its best games without him. They looked inspired and even though they were outplayed dramatically the effort, speed and intensity was really good. If Jones plays the next game and the team comes out flat and plays uninspired and unimpressive can the team continue to play him? |

He took a flyer on Hall. No biggie. He traded for Mrazek for the sweetener and he turned his game around it was a great, albeit lucky trade. So far, other than the Mrazek trade, KD hasn’t made a trade where he’s got a guy back who looks to be a potential long term asset. As I said he’s done a great job stocking the team. So far his trades and been unimpressive. The other three areas he has to prove he’s adept at are signing free agents and in future evaluating his roster and and managing the cap. |

Duffy, you may have answered your question about Juntorp. Who has heard of him before last night? His name has probably been mentioned here 10 times more in the last 18 hours than since he got drafted. For the record, a 6th round pick in 2022. 6-1, 190 lb RW. Not exactly lighting up the Swedish league. |

One of their best games by getting 14 shots on goal? The best game in which we got shelled for 40 shots against? There were some really dumb passes made by our D last night and things could have gotten really ugly if Soderblom wasn't playing well. The game had a few good moments but overall, ugly. |

Yeah, I said they were outplayed dramatically. But it was the best game in HOW they played. Fast, hard and inspired. |
