Absolutely, he is undoubtedly one of the best ever, but he's not Mount Rushmore worthy. He's that next level guy with the likes of Sakic, Yzerman, Jagr, Messier (barf), Henrik Sedin, etc.

to your point though, how could anyone really change the game today? there's an extent to which it can evolve, you aren't gonna revolutionize the way it's played with every generation.

They didn't change the game like the original but people forget how horrible the product was before they were drafted. The Penguins would have been gone from Pittsburgh if it was for Crosby (Malkin, Fleury, Letang).

Thing is... you included 3 players that kept the Pens in Pitt.

Gretz all on his own revived hockey on the west coast. And this was after his golden years.

Crazy comment. There are trailblazers who deserve to be on that list. Richard when the talent was on six teams. He scored 50 in 50. How many goals would be scored if you only played against the top five teams every night? When holding and inteference was allowed.

The list seams to only include those since he got his first TV.

Ovies missed 200 games during his absolute primeā€¦and not due to injuries but due to lockouts/covid. Had these not happened we would have been talking about a chase to 1000 goals and not Gretzā€™s record

So how many goals would Gretz have scored if it wasn't for Gary Suter?

Oven-chicken has been consistent, but he's never been head-and-shoulders above his peers. And that is what the upper echelon is all about.

9? You seem to be misremembering him as Mike Gartner. Makes sense since he was also a Capital.

Sure he was great at goal-scoring. Consistent in that aspect.

But he was never waaaaay better than his peers (overall) in any season the way way Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux were.

His best year with 65 goals and 112 pts was 6 points ahead of Malkin, and Was was eliminated in first round.

Of course he is great.
But he does not belong in same class as Gretz, Lemieux and Orr.
