Caufield, Suzuki, Guhle... it isn't as horrendous as people are making it to be. - Pat1993
There was some talent, just no depth of talent of pool/prospects, no development program, no extra picks, bad cap management/contracts.

i had to keep saying to myself "john, you can't play any of these!"
i guess a 4th would be overkill for a guy who just likes to look at them. - kicksave856
Sounds like me and boobies.....

Not horrendous. But not necessarily ideal.
I think MB was set up better to take over when he did.

He wasn't all bad.
He did acquire some picks and drafted a little better at the end of his tenure. The Pacioretty for Suzuki trade was also a great thing moving forward.
But I still think his good moves were almost always overshadowed by the massive mistakes he made at important moments. He ended up doing more bad things than good ones.

Probably as that one was from the Canes in the KK deal.

well given that they were in "all-in" mode for the cup it's kind of normal he didn't leave behind an interesting prospect pool or a ton of picks, but yeah I agree Hughes and Gorton were left with bad contracts to handle. my point is they were still able to add to key players they could keep, and didn't start from scratch. |

He inherited a 3rd overall pick and a young core of Price, Pacioretty, Subban, Markov, Plekanec.
For all the justified hate Gauthier/Gainey received, they did leave him with something decent to build around quickly.

Let's keep in mind that MB fluked his way to that as he wanted Glass instead. Suzuki was the consolation prize. Of course he wanted the guy that didn't turn out to be decent. That's his MO.

yeah, he kinda ruined things during the last few years, perhaps his tenure should've been shortened lol

I don't find that's really an argument against him, he still pulled the trigger on that trade, he could've decided to be firm on wanting Glass and moved on entirely.

I think he was just plain tired, burnt-out and miserable. I bet his mental health was taking a poop-kicking over the years and then COVID as a cherry on top.

That was the trade that sent me over the edge. I was SO excited we drafted him then BOOM!! GONE!!
I'll never forgive him for that miserable trade only to bring in the token french player with a bad attitude and force him to play centre

I know you're right, but I don't think you can judge a trade on "what it could have been if the other team wasn't dumb". You judge it on the trade that did happen.
If the Rangers pick Plekanec for Kovalev instead of Josef Balej, we wouldn't be talking about Bob Gainey's best trade. |

And you're absolutely correct. It's like basing suspensions on intent.
