I understand why you would label it "hope" strategy, but it is not based upon hope from their perspective. Now, I agree with you, I preferred to trade TK and accumulate more picks and go with as many top 10 picks as possible- strip it down like CHI with Bedard. They believe they have a foundation of talent that can compete- Michkov, TK, Tippett, Sanheim (sure got lucky with Krug)- argument others currently on the roster could be added to this list. Now they will supplement with hockey trades and still drafting. They have to win big on the hockey trades. Frankly, they need to win the Gauthier- Drysdale trade
Too early to tell, IMO- especially considering what the 2nd rd pick brings. I do not believe Briere will use all 3 1st rd picks for prospects. So whatever player Briere acquires needs to have a huge impact- in that regard there is some hope involved with my hypothetical. - Trox88
Exactly but I don't really care how they see it. They aren't going to do it. They don't have the management and they certainly don't have the coach. Who is really calling the shots right now. I guess if you think that they can acquire players that have a huge impact, there is some hope. I have zero faith that they can do that by trade or free agency. The only thing that can change the outlook is if they get lucky in the draft. Draft a player who turns out to be elite with a later first round pick or a later round pick hits. |

Come playoff time when things tighten up even the best of the best have to play defense. It doesn't EVER hurt to learn to play on the defensive side of the puck. - Phillywhiteout
He’s fine defensively. 90% of defensive is heart and effort. Experience helps. I have zero concerns that his d game will ever be an issue |

Yeah they have a little same as every year. But like you said they spend it fast for quick fix. Well not even fix. Quick mistake more like it |

Yeah it was. Imagine the return they could have gotten for him?
What benefit is he providing now? They wont make the playoffs. By the time they are a contender he will be well in to his 30's.
Right now he is a Rolls Royce in the ghetto being driven by a homeless guy. - MBFlyerfan
I dont think the return would have been that great. A late 1st and a prospect maybe.Hard to tell CHI sold Debrincat with 1 year on his contract and didnt get as much as people thought

Actually, during the presser he also commended MM on getting better and better with his checking. I think folks that think Torts is gonna ruin this kid need to chill and those worries will end up being unfounded. It's not like Torts hasn't dealt with ultra talented players before. As long as they work hard they will be fine. He just doesn't like lazy talent. - Phillywhiteout
Montgomery > Torts. Monty fired
Richardson > Torts. Richy fired
Lavy > Torts. Rangers are a dumpster fire, how much longer will Lavy last.
Torts is fine and MM is doing great, probably compete with TK on top scorer.

There is no guarantee that they didn't shop or receive offers for TK. While it may have been a decent return, it was probably underwhelming for a rental as TK could have walked as a UFA. If we were not going to receive good value in a return, there was no sense in trading him. Having said that, if someone walks up at this TDL, and blows you away with an offer because he now is locked in, pull the trigger before his NTC begins. |

Every coach eventually gets fired. None of that is an indicator of what kind of coach Tortorella is.

Yup, that TK sure was as bad move by the Flyers - jd250
the contract will be deemed bad by the time he hits 35. Noone is saying TK of today isn't worth the money..it's when he is 35 that he won't be.

100% agree…
But the funniest part is they never are gonna have this mythical cap space because as they’ve shown they have no idea how to build or use cap. They will spend 50% or more of any available cap space on players they have shown over and over to target.
Nd
Rp
Seeler
Ej
Etc etc etc.
They will hand out 8 year deals to player approaching 30 years old knowing how that story goes….
See coots
See tk - Stayin alive
Can’t argue with that at all. They hand out big contracts to players who are not big contract players. MM39 appears to be worthy of suck a contract if he continues on this trajectory, and rebuild issues and timeframes aside, TK at least right now is living up to his massive extension (although he’s still playing on his previous contract until 7/1/25). They need to be more disciplined when signing extensions and long term contracts than they have been. |

Part of the return that Chicago got in the Debrincat trade was the 7th overall pick in the draft.

And then they’ll spend it for sure. The problem is, as many have argued before, they need home grown elite players. Look at the relatively recent success of teams like Pittsburgh, Chicago and LA. Most of their elite players were drafted and home grown and then they spent the $ on them to extend them. Crosby, Letang, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Quick, Doughty, etc. right now the Flyers have Michkov and arguably TK. Both home grown through the draft. They need to draft higher and better to be a legit contender in the future. |

By the time he is 35 he will be a 3rd liner and will be getting slightly overpaid for a 3rd liner.

It's that and a lack of understanding that a player like Konecny actually hurts you from the viewpoint of the future. A team in the Flyers position that keeps Konecny has either a flawed sense of team building or really is just trying to build a somewhat marketable team to drive revenue.

“We’re not going to be adding. We’ll be subtracting. We’ve been clear about that,” Jones told Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne on the Real Kyper & Bourne show this week. “We are not in a position where we’re ready to be a Stanley Cup-contending team yet.
“We’re gonna battle and try to win every night, but at the same time, we’re not losing sight of where we need to get to in order to be a team that can consistently compete for the Stanley Cup.”
This means that Laughton will be traded then. He is the most coveted and easiest to trade player on the roster. Risto should be traded as well but I think we are a year away from that. IMO they will add before they subtract a player like Scott Laughton.
Hopefully I am wrong. |

He’s a polarizing coach for sure. There are a lot of things I like about him and some things I don’t. He has his way and he has always stuck by it, and as you mentioned above, for good reason.
Some guys really respond well to his “old school” tactics….which is a term I find funny when I think almost every coach that came before him coached liked this. Michkov appears to have taken to his methods, which to me is the most important thing….last night they mentioned what a D man Werenski has become and how he spoke glowingly about Torts and said he really made a difference earlier in his career. Werenski basically said “he wouldn’t be having the success he was having now had he not been under Torts”.
We’ve seen the better play of Risto (although last night wasn’t one to remember) and now the focus appears to be on Drysdale….if he can get him to a level that everyone had hoped for in his draft year, then that trade won’t look bad at all. - landros 2
you need to evolve. Can you say Torts has?
