But the thing is that he has been better than a late first round pick for the Habs this season as well.

not saying I'd trade him, but it is definitively an option. we don't know, maybe his agent is asking for 5M per on his next deal. then what do you do? you give him 5 per? or let him walk for nothing?

yup, and besides you need a young veteran like Evans, the habs already have plenty of picks, it would be unnecessary imho.

I agree with you, from here, 3-3.5 looks reasonable, but if he thinks he can get 5 on July 1st.... like I said we don't know what's going on in these contract discussions.

meh, Danault is much more skilled offensively, I don't see this as a true comparable.
