Ouch! - winsix
Naw, I don't think they are the same type of player, just disappointed that Cowan really has not impressed. I guess none of the Canadians has looked all that great.

If you ever wonder why a team is winning or losing today, it's usually because of something great, or stupid, they did 5-7 years ago. Leafs made a lot of mistakes and it's been catching up to them every step of the way since.
What are the odds that Cowan has more NHL points than Sandin in the next 3 years?
I'd say, next to 0.
Muzzin for Durzi, Grundstrom and 1st round pick (Tobias Bjornfot). McMichael went 25th. As a London Knight, would have been a prime pick for the Leafs.
Marleau for Seth Jarvis. They wanted him gone but they certainly weren't creative about how they did it.
Kadri for Barrie.
Kapanen for Rodion Amirov (RIP) but he was a bad pick regardless with Dawson Mercer sitting right there.
Denis Malgin for Mason Marchment.
Acquiring McCann to put on waivers to protect Kerfoot.
Trading down to pick Dermott and Bracco over Konecny.
The ROR, Foligno and Giordano deals could all bite them back one day once we see how those picks develop and yielded nothing really substantial as rentals.
Reality is, the Leafs traded way too many draft picks and prospects for rentals then failed in the playoffs. Then, also traded younger players who could be contributing to this team today for "futures" which will not be doing jack poop in this current window of opportunity.
Burned the candle at both ends. |

this one way to look at it.
not all trades work out.

If there is a way to get Zibanajed a bit retained do it.
He will go back to his PPG self on whatever team he is traded to. |

We could certainly use a centre who could play wing. I feel that the problem with Zibanejad for us is that he plays too similarly to most of our offensive players already - not physical enough, not enough board presence, not enough puck battle in his game. I think he's a good enough player - but he is turning 32 as this season concludes and is signed for 5 more years at $8.5m. I have to admit that I think his game is already declining a little . . . I don't know what degree of retention I'd want on Zibanejad, but I bet it would be more than the Rangers would like to absorb for 5 years.
O'Reilly is 2 years older and showing some steep decline in his game, too - but he has 2 years left @ $4.5 and feels more like what we want or need.
I'd rather have Kadri for the here and now but his contract is basically a non-starter @ $7m for 4 more years until he's 38.

I think the cap going up softens the blow of Kadri. But still any player over 30 that is getting traded at a significant cap hit needs some retained, its just the way it would have to be for any team. Leafs had to retain on Kessel.
Zib I don't watch play much but he has done well in playoffs.
For the first time this season I believe the Leafs may actually be planning an LTIR stint for AM the last 20 games of the season after the TDL. I think they let him play in the 4 nations and then shut him down. With how his nagging injury has played out they 100% would be able to do it. Fans would go insane but it would be 100% within the rules and IF he still is not 100% by March(looks like he will not be) then you do it. You do it and you get one of these good C's with term. |

Gourde is a solid option for a 3C. I'd be happy if Tampa brought him back.
He is on the last year of his contract.
He has (according to interwebs) said he is not against playing in Toronto.
Good two-way game and responsible defensively.
Plays with grit and sandpaper. Not afraid to drop the mitts. Plays playoff hockey.
Can pot a few goals. Has scored 20+ three times, including 21 on a weak Seattle team.
Good locker room guy and a championship pedigree.
If Toronto could get him cheap, I'd pounce on a deal. |

Zib is too fugly to play for the attractive Leafs.
Are you gonna put that ugly mug up in front of cameras next to an Adonis like Nylander? You gonna put that long greasy trailer park mullet up there with Matthews' glorious pornstache?
Zib makes Luke Glendening look like George Clooney.
Unless the Rangers retain and pay for plastic surgery, that's a pass. |

Okay, I'm starting to be sympathetic toward a timeline in which the Leafs get Matthews Mark Stoned until Game 1 of the playoffs and blast their cap into the stratosphere at the deadline. |

As much as it would suck to not watch Matthews play for the rest of the season, the Leafs are gonna win the division with their best player in franchise history not playing. The time is now to shred the gnar. |

CJ said yesterday his injury is more about comfort and mobility and surgery has never been an option.
This is the most easy "we need to LTIR this player before playoffs" in history. They sent him to Germany, he has missed multiple stretches. There is nothing the NHL can investigate. There is no chance in hell the Leafs are playing him in the final few weeks...so why not extend it another 10 games and get 13M in cap space.
Would be hilarious to see other fans losing sleep over it too. |

It's not just that Cowan has not shown his potential, he's been downright awful all tournament and is hurting the team. His play against Latvia was probably the most mad a single player has made me during a game in a long time. Like maybe try passing the puck everyone in and a while? And that horrible shootout attempt? |
