Because the jays have been aggressive in persuing Ohtani/Soto and ..according to reports have offered high (highest?) amounts.
So keep the team in that may offer you more money, so you can get more from your team of choice - senstroll
Two other things to consider:
Because of international signing rules he’ll paid a minor league salary with most of the real $ coming from the team’s international pool. There’s not enough in those pools to make a real difference between teams, so $ may not be a huge factor.
Japanese endorsements will be big. In LA, he’d be behind Ohtani and Yamamoto.
This is from Jim Bowden, former GM. He thinks Jays have a shot. |

I expect his will be a very low value "show me" contract, and maybe he has some loyalty to the Leafs for getting an easy payday last year. Hard to look at his production the last few years as he's been dealing with hip issues for years, if I understand correctly. D depth is always a good thing. I'd say very low risk, for a potentially large reward. - Whipper
I get his value, but I don't get his value to us.
McCabe - Tanev: shouldn't be changed
Rielly - Myers/Hakanpaa/Benoit: I wouldn't want Klingberg here with Rielly.
OEL - Myers/Hakanpaa/Benoit: As a third pairing, this is pretty decent.

thats fine because I dont care about the money. its the player - senstroll
He played on half a hip dude.
If he sucks then they don't play him. No cap is lost only money.
You just don't like it because you won't have control over if he plays or not if he is bad.
It is worth a shot from a management standpoint, easily. |

Before his hip was truly done he had a 4-5 game stretch where on half a hip he looked like the best PPQB this team has had in a decade. Which is probably more a shot at Mo then it is Klingberg looking good. Worth the risk free gamble. |

I get where you are coming from - I think the issue is really that even with both good hips Klingberg was always a bad defenseman with good offensive instincts. For me, we need more defense out of our defense and I just don't think that Klingberg, even when he was 25, was what we need _now_ (unless you move Rielly) - but he's not 25. He's 32 - he's on the wrong side of his best years and he's recovering from a debilitating injury. Even fully recovered, the 32 year old player very likely won't be close to the same as the 25 year old player was.
I don't know. To me if he wants to revive his NHL career, he should be doing it on a team that needs to be taking long shots or that has nothing to lose.

Klingberg at 26 had a dominant run in the Stanley cup playoffs.
And you don't need to be sure, that is the best part about a league minimum contract.
The Leafs could sign you today for 750K and it wouldn't effect the cap at all once they bury you.
He can move the puck and can QB a PP. He is worth a shot because the Leafs need both those things. |

They are playing Timmins right now who did have a solid first 10 games but has been almost unplayable.
Worth a shot for someone who can help the PP and move the puck. |

Who does he replace? Who does he play with at 5v5? How much of a liability is that pairing - because you play 75% of the game at 5v5 and he doesn't kill penalties - or he shouldn't . . . this is why people are balking at the fit. It's not the money. It's not the buriability (new word!) of the contract. It's the role that the player performs on the team when he isn't being a PPQB - that Marc Savard would just screw up anyway.

Timmins is playing because McCabe was injured.
McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Myers
OEL - Benoit . . . seems to the the current running, and they would swap out Myers for Hakanpaa if he were healthy.
Anyway. We'll see what happens but he's not a fix for this Power play. The problem with the power play isn't Morgan Rielly. He's not even on it and it sucks.

But, but, I like Timmy
I'd do it though. Maybe rotate a couple guys in and out of the lineup, make them compete for playing time. |

Agreed.
Not sure why we would be so gun-ho about bringing back players that didnt work the first time or dont fit with how the team works now |

Timmins? Injuries? Benoit? There will be injuries and there will be rotating out.
And again you try him, he doesn't work out he doesn't have to replace anyone and it doesn't effect the cap.
He doesn't need to PK.
The only reason people don't want him signed is because as a fan you do not have control, and the thought of having that half hip Klingberg a staple scares the poop out of people.
It is a high reward low risk move. There is no risk. |

Yeah I would think a year recovery with hip surgery would probably indicate that any games prior to it probably were bad. |

I agree, he's an absolute pylon.
We already have OEL and they don't use him in the correct situations.
If Klingberg had a track record of goal scoring, I could possibly like the idea of signing him to league minimum for the PP but his goal scoring, his health and his defense are all suspect. |

For all the complaining that people do about Leafs tickets, have you seen the prices for Saturday night's Leafs vs. Habs game in Montreal?
I'm going to be there visiting my daughter - it would cost me $1,000 for the worst 3 tickets at the Bell Centre.
Nope. - Atomic Wedgie
Cost me $200 to get Lonestar for 5 people with only 2 drinks...and that place sucks ass. Not surprised at the prices of tickets. Sens tickets are "expensive" these days. |

So what does $200 get you? Dinner and 2 drinks? Can you see the game? |
