Because clearly the mix isn't working, and that goes beyond just one player, people forget that this team has been together (the core) as it stands for almost 7 years now, they made the playoffs twice in that span and only got past the first round (I don't consider the play-in round to be the true "first" round of the playoffs the COVID year). There's been very little improvement year-to-year and usually because of coaching change bumps. That's not a team that screams contender or playoff team to me.

It's time to think long-term, this time as constructed clearly isn't able to consistently play up to it's potential and gives up in both big games and games against lesser competition. You can blame Tocchet for not preparing them well enough, but this has been a problem since the Sedins moved on and Hughes, Petey, Miller and Demko took over. The time has come for major changes, and maybe that means being really bad and acquiring 1OA's or 2nd or 3rd OA's for a few years and completely rebuilding the team and paying more attention to the mix rather than focusing on trying to fill holes and appeasing players, regardless of how skilled or good they are.

Losing Hughes would suck, but the haul he'd give would set us up for a decade (provided it's the RIGHT haul)

I don't believe there is ever a way to get fair value for a player of Hughes' value. Reloading with him and Petey still on the team just makes so much more sense.

Find a way to trade Miller for Nemec, offload Boeser at the TDL for picks or players doesn't matter. Take a swing on a big name UFA or 2 and then trade what you got for Boeser + other assets to get a replacement 2C. The goaltending depth is fine if you resign Lankinen.
