I really think this is about using tariffs to replace income tax as a revenue source, basically bringing in a national sales tax. Sales taxes are more regressive and allow big income tax reductions for the guys at the top of the food chain.

Using tariffs allows him to pick and choose what domestic industries get hit and which don’t. (25% on China would have been bad news for President Musk.) if he breaks poop in making these changes, oh well.
