Back to hockey because (frank) political talk.
Saw a tweet that the Leafs should have about 28.5M in cap space for next year. Sounds great but they also have the following contracts up:
UFAs
Marner
JT
Patches
Lorentz
Hak
Murray
RFAs
Knies
Timmins
Holmberg
Robertson
Dewar
Knowing some of these are no brainer "See ya's" they will still be tight to re-up everyone they want, especially if some of these guys want huge bank.
Going to be interesting to see what happens here. - Cush29
What do you think Knies next contract will be?
I am less worried about JT contract, they will find some common ground on this.
Marner contract is the biggest issue.

I heard Trump went into a restaurant and he ate all the food in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant. |

Your over reliance on this weak response is telling. Anyone you disagree with politically is deranged. I'm seeing a definite pattern here. - GalacticStone
The pattern is not wasting time on people so deranged they can't be saved. |

Again, like many of your hockey takes, that is your opinion, not an objective fact. You sometimes seem to have trouble distinguishing the two. |

UFAs
Marner - pay the man
JT - can come back at a reduced rate - I'm thinking $4M X 4. He'll get much better offers, and it's up to him (and his wife).
Patches - Not a penny over $1M.
Lorentz - there are 200 other guys who can provide what he provides.
Hak - ha ha ha, good one
Murray - see ya
RFAs
Knies - pay the man
Timmins - who cares?
Holmberg - who cares?
Robertson - fresh start elsewhere
Dewar - who cares?

I'm really worried about what Marner's camp wants and if MLSE will cave and give it to him if it's insanely high. I have a hard time with what he makes today TBH but they can't pay him more than Matthews at least I hope not.
Knies is an RFA so not sure - I would like them to lock him up for 5 years at least but again not sure what he will want but they have arb if they are really far apart I guess?
Agree on JT but again hope MLSE says "if you want to stay you have to take less so we can build and bring in more of what is needed" AND hope JT says yes and does so.

FYI I was just listing them all, I was not saying any were 'must re-sign' players or not.
"Pay the man" means what though? i.e. Marner and Knies? What is your ceiling on how much? I mean what if Marner wants half or more of that cap space? Do you give him 14M or more?

Also I would like Robertson to stay with Leafs. He needs more time to develop, but he has the jump and good offensive upside. All he needs is time, not sure if the Leafs have the time to wait though.
Marner camp will put a huge pressure on MLSE and I am afraid they will cave as usually. |

If I was Marner, I'd take a 3 or 4 year deal @ 12.5M and re-up again @16M for another 3 years and so on.

It is always risk to get injured during these first 3 years.
He will try to cash it now and as much as possible.

there is that possibility but it give the team some flexibility in signing better depth players.
otherwise it's a 13M for 8 years with full NMC or see yeah! |

Interesting that the cap floor in 27-28 is going to be what the cap ceiling is now.
After years of pinching pennies, this is nuts.
Marner and his agent are rock hard.

It would be nice of course. But I have not seen our best players giving poop about team's cap space yet. Hopefully I am wrong. |

My nerdy spreadsheet shows they'll have 64M committed to 7F, 6D and both goalies. Without moving any of those they need to add 5F and 2-3 depth pieces.
Marner, JT and Knies are probably 3 of the F. Lorentz could be back. Some kids could get in the mix (Cowan, Minten, Grebenkin). Could see them wanting to add that 3C too.
I think it's shaping up pretty good. Re-sign the big 3, backfill a couple of cheap depth guys and/or graft in a kid or two, and have about 4-5M to spend on a legit 3C.
