its tough because how many years did he trade draft pics to pick up a player to make that final over the top push being so close, and sadly it never worked out. that said, drafting and development has been an achillies heel for how many years??? if you had a young gun in the system you wouldnt have to trade a #1 pic to get that player at trade deadline. I dont reget those moves but when you give up those high pics, it hurst long term.
but Sweeneys drafting overall has been disappointing, and how many great coaches do they have to fire???

The window is closed. That is clear at least to everyone watching. Is ownership going to allow them to take a few seasons and re-tool? I think this the only path as the the team will never rebuild unless there is no other choice like 2006 when they failed the Thornton trade and totally (frank)ed up their first season in the cap era.

The Jacobs will look at the body of work that is Neely's tenure and call it a success. Which profit-wise it is. Sweeny and Neely are not going anywhere. Best we got is they
a) realize the window is closed and look to future
b) ownership is on board with this path

Sounds like an expensive retool is in order. A half-measure that will probably consist of trading a big player for a lesser player and a pick, then betting on more reclamation projects in free agency.

I hear your argument, but counter with what the most likely outcome is going to be. Business as usual.

what, are you saying guys like Kevin Stevens, Al Iafrate, and Bill Guerin weren't exactly what the team needed at the time

OR

Counter offer. Sell Lohrei, Merkulov, Poitras and seven first rounders for a name brand shambling corpse on skates and hope they have enough in the tank to carry the team to a second wild card spot? Any takers?

YASSSSSSSS. Lets book it right now. Might need to throw in a couple more first rounders just to sweeten the deal.
