That sounds like McDavid talking about scoring goals - making it sound a lot easier than it seems.

I guess you just get used to it and adapt. I'd probably hop a couple of curbs or dent a few fenders before I got the hang of it. Do NOT let me drive your car in the winter.

Manual transmission with a traction control switch makes it even easier. Just a skill you learn, like anything else.

I don't know how you guys do it in that frozen wet slick poop. Driving on those roads would terrify me.

I grew up outside St. Louis as a kid, but have never driven on frozen roads as an adult.

I don't get how all life and commerce doesn't grind to a total halt when it's near-blizzard like conditions or the roads are frozen over with sheets of ice.

I drove a short distance in sleet in Tennessee back in 2002 and my bumhole was puckered up tight enough to make diamonds and I only went a short distance of about 10 miles one way.

i went to tim o’neil wicked pissah winter rally school in NH so, like most other aspects of my life, I’m an expert 👊

When you have a fleet of trucks putting brine and salt on the road that helps, but most of it is slowing down and having winter tires and experience.

It's common to see the driver who blew past you in the snowstorm subsequently stranded in the ditch a few kilometres down the road. Slow down and adjust for the traction loss.

I actually did see a streetcar driver coming down a hill today honk to warn people that he might slide when trying to stop. Everything gets sketchy when you get 25 cm of snow dumped on a city.

When it's all you know, and you learn to drive in it that's part of it (i.e. you are forced to drive in it when your learning) it just becomes 'normal' for the winter.

Snow tires make a huge difference and not being a knob on the roads too by adjusting your speed to meet the conditions and not trying to pass snow plows etc.

I was in Nashville one time and the guy driving the hop on hop off bus thingy we were on told us they got and inch and a half one year and it shut down the entire city for 2 or 3 days. I guess having no plows or sand trucks etc. would do that.

This old dog probably wouldn't learn the new driving trick too easily. I can barely drive a standard without wrecking the clutch. If I moved to Canada, I'd probably just let myself get chaffeurred around by an experienced winter driver.

I ran across this earlier today and thought I would share it. I don't have any specific person or group in mind, other than our little collective unorthodox tribe of Leafers in here. We only agree on one thing - LEAFS, and sometimes barely that.

This Oatmeal cartoon has a really good message to it and it made me smile - https://theoatmeal.com/comics/believe_clean

All of us - left, right, and center could benefit from taking this to heart.

Awesome.

Some good insights into experience there.

I also like the analogy that thr amygdala doesn't know the difference between a real threat and false one (tiger vs. public speaking for example). It is dumb hardware like a thermostat. But that means it also doesn't know the difference between a real response by you and a fake one.

Which is why if you feel the physical emotions but do the thing anyway, you reprogram the amygdala to stop having that reaction.

These bumholes down here would be killing themselves left and right on frozen roads. Florida drivers are (frank)ing awful and don't slow down for rain or fog, so I imagine they'd try to haul ass on ice.

The secret is to take your ride to an empty parking low after a big snowfall and screw around to figure out how your car behaves.

Try to get the rear end to kick out on purpose and whatnot.

Generally, any AWD car (with winter tires) is just fine in the snow tho

Spent most of my late teens doing that!

We used to find an empty parking lot, 4 or 5 cars, roll our car windows down and try to blast a snow bukkake in each other's cars from fishtails and donuts during big snow falls.

Dumb ass Canadian teens...but I am really good at driving in the snow now.
