It is absolutely protecting their interests. You need to expand your definition of "interests". It's not just oil. It's also protecting a buffer that exists between Russia and Europe. It's about showing Putin that the world can quickly come together and fight back. Many Americans probably don't care and think that it doesn't impact them but if it doesn't now, it will in the future. As for Ukrainians, ask them if they think they are being sacrificed or whether they feel like they are protecting their country. Do you think they would be happier under the oppression of Russia? Trump back-stabbed them in the back by starting negotiations with Putin without Ukraine being involved. They already conceded that Ukraine will not get Crimea back and will likely never join NATO. There were many Ukrainians who would very much have liked closer ties to Russia, if not to be part of Russia, why do you think the West started interfering with their politics? Because a more “pro-Russia” government was elected. US needs to stay out of other countries’ internal affairs. Let the Ukrainians figure out/decide on their own country’s path for themselves. If they really cared so much for Ukraine, how come no one even batted an eye when Putin took Crimea back?
Now Ukrainians are heroically fighting for their survival, in a war that never should have started. Yes, Putin started the war, but let’s not ignore the things the West did to escalate the situation in Ukraine.

Trump is not serious regarding Canada and Greenland - it is just part of his negotiating strategy, in this case to get the Trudeau administration to patrol its side of the border better and, in the case of Greenland, to get the countries of Europe to spend more on defense. The only tangible benefit the US gets by being in NATO is the ability to have military bases in Greenland, and the guarantee that Russia and China have to stay off the island. NATO should have been dissolved in 1992.

If Kamala had won we very well may have a nuclear war with Russia at this point, and might all be dead. Just something to think about. The previous administration stupidly escalated that situation. Trump is in the process of deescalating the situation with Russia. And I guess Biden's use of the DOJ/FBI against his political enemies (which Kamala would have certainly increased) and the use of kangaroo courts against face act violators and J6 people is "democracy".

As for eliminating trade imbalances, you need to learn more about how the world economies work. If you want something the other trading partner but you don't, guess what? You have to buy from them as you don't have any or can't produce it for the same price. Canada has a lot of things the U.S. just loves to buy. We're also 1/10th of your population therefore, will consume far less, meaning not buying as much as you. Just as a stupid example but one that simplifies what it would take to eliminate the trade deficit between the two countries... for every American car bought by an American, a Canadian would have to buy 10. President Trump saying Trump things is fine - I fully expected that when he got voted back in office last November.

What I did not expect was the White House going on record saying that the "51st state" thing isn't off the table, and to take everything President Trump says at face value.

When Musk got placed in charge of DOGE, I expected cost-cutting to take place and layoffs to occur, quickly. I did not expect him to have access to everyone's SSN and IRS returns, nor did I expect the White House to remove the independence of independent agencies.
