Saw this - not sure how accurate it actually is but for me that's too much per year if it's 7.

Per David Pagnotta the Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares have made significant progress on a contract extension that Is expected to come to fruition.
The deal still needs some “fine tuning” before becoming official but it is believed it will be a 3 year extension as agreed by both team and player around $7 million AAV (or at least in that ballpark)

AAV seems a little high for me still. Was hoping the 5-6 range.

Finally! Something non-politics we can all argue about.

With a rising cap, I could live with 3x7m.

That's 4 AAV higher per year than some in here said he would sign for.

In fairness, Dreger was on the panel earlier in the year and said JT would have to take "far less than 5" to stay with the Leafs.

He doesn't have medical clearance - still injured.
- Atomic Wedgie

I think the Canucks didn’t want him to fly out and then back just to sit so they denied him a medical clearance.

I find that we have trouble adjusting our cap thinking with the increasing cap - so we get used to thinking of a number as high when perhaps it's becoming the norm - and so on. Like I think due to the flat cap for 3 years and incremental change we have a normalized concept of the cap sitting around $82m in our head. We know it's more but when judging numbers it floats back to that basic familiar structure.

Like for instance Tavares' $11m contract would be worth $13.2m in next year's cap money, but $7m - if it had been signed in 2018, would have been $5.8m . . . which is roughly where a lot of Leaf fans feel he belongs ($5 - $6m). Some are closer to $4m and so on, but I think 5-6 is still in the range.

If I were doing a 3 year span, I'd have probably considered something like 6, 5, 4 - or even scaled a little less, but still it sets that mid point at around a considered $5m of the "normalized" cap. That equals 6.1% of the cap. If I average the next 3 years at 6.1%, it works out to $5.56m - so $7m would be high . . but in 2028 $7m will be the new $5m, so it's not abysmal.

In 2002 we played the Islanders in the quarter-finals and I both worked and lived downtown - my route either way took me basically beside the ACC. I had joked that if I saw Yashin I was going to knee cap him.

Well I did see Yashin - walking with Isbister and Kvasha.

Holy Jesus those guys were massive. I had no idea Yashin was that big - and he was the small one. Needless to say no one got knee capped that day.

A few years ago, the whole famn damily went to Pittsburgh to see the Leafs play.

We happened to stay at the same hotel the Baltimore Ravens were staying.

I got into an elevator with a few of them - I've never felt smaller in my entire life.

I guess the optimist in me says that it's $1M less than Stamkos.

And then the pessimist in me says "look how far Stamkos has fallen, so quickly. He's not worth $4M. Signing guys that old always comes with a risk."

Fair points but you need to also layer in the 'give us a (big/medium) hometown discount because you have been here for 8 years and not delivered a cup and been paid 11M per year' factor. lol

You make very valid points, as usual.

But if Tavares is truly that obsessed with having to play in Toronto, the Leafs need a better discount than that. Just look at what happened with Stamkos. Goal scoring dries up at first slowly, then quickly.

The Leafs still stand to spend 70%+ on forwards next year (assuming Marner re-signs for 14 AAV and Tavares signs for 7 AAV). Knies is also ready for an extension as well and wouldn't surprise me if he wants 7 AAV too. They need that number down closer to 60-65%.

The cap is indeed going up but that also means your future UFAs will be more expensive. And the Leafs still need to make additions to improve the team during it's window of opportunity. As well as cap space for trades.

I'd like to see how much $ Chicago is willing to retain on Seth Jones. He's not elite but I think he's better than he's been in Chicago. The Leafs could use a big body, RHD with a strong point shot. That's the type of player I'd rather spend 7-9 AAV on than Tavares unless Tavares continues to reduce his price. Perhaps then can promise him a front office position to make up the lost $ in the future if he's that steadfast on never leaving Toronto ever again.
