Maybe not the #1 target but Jake Evans is an option for the Leafs 3C/4C position.

He can kill penalties and he's a Tarana boy. He's got 11 goals and 3 SHG. Not that big but fairly physical and an upgrade over what we currently have (Kampf / Holmberg). Can play both C/W. 52.5% at FOs. He's 28 so there's potential to re-sign him. Ideally, you find another team for Kampf to offset the cost.

Evans is a solid PK player and a good defensive centreman but I don't think he's more than a 4C on a good team because he doesn't bring much offense, this season will be a career best and the first time he'll get over 29 points.

As for the possibility to resign him, you'd have to be willing to give him north of 4M per season for more than 4 years, as it's likely what he's asking right now and why Montreal won't resign him.

Definetely a useful player to have and, I think, would help Toronto for sure.

I think if he's having a career year, he can fit as a 3C because the Leafs have Domi and could platoon them situationally because Evans is better on the PK, defending a lead while Domi is more offensive (at his best). He's also a big upgrade over Holmberg and Kampf offensively.

I find it hard to believe he would get any actual offers pf 4 x 4 as a UFA with those numbers. He's more in the 2/2.5 range. But if that's the case, even as a rental he could benefit the team.

He wouldn't be the #1 target but he's an option if other deals can't be made.

As a pure rental he'll get a lot of interest. Especially as a right handed C.

If he was willing to accept that number, he'd be signed to a new contract already. Some reports had Montreal offering more than 3M and, according to Lebrun, "they weren't close".

But yeah, he'd be a nice pickup as a rental for probably a 2nd rounder.

Maybe he'd take less to play in TO on a playoff team. It's not a guarantee but it might be a selling point that brings him down a bit. I'd rather have him than Kampf at the same price, that's for sure.

If the Leafs can't get a better 3C, I'd take Evans for a 2nd and try to move Kampf for the same or even a 3rd and consider it a win and an improvement.

Maybe you're right.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem players don't seem to view Toronto as "I'll take less to play there" lately.

I'd say him being from Toronto might bring him down 500K. I'd think the bigger factor is the Leafs are consistently a playoff team, currently in 1st while Montreal seems to still be in between lottery team and wild card.

He might say to himself "a million less per year to play for my childhood team and be in the playoffs every year is worth it".

Or he might not. I just don't see too many teams throwing 3-4 AAV for a guy with 38 career goals and end up where most bottom-six C land at 2/2.5 AAV.

Carolina's not trading him.

....probably.

They offered him 8 at $13.5 and he hasn't accepted or rejected it. Who the hell is going to offer him more than that?

Even as a rental, it'd be stupid for Carolina to acquire a proven winner, playoff performer and then trade him for an assortment of pieces.

If they trade him, it's for another guy who gives them instant playoff push power.
