Even as a rental, it'd be stupid for Carolina to acquire a proven winner, playoff performer and then trade him for an assortment of pieces.
If they trade him, it's for another guy who gives them instant playoff push power. - Rare_Jewel
I gaurentee you if it were the leafs and they just traded for Guentzel the year before only to lose him and now potentially lose Rantanen...You would be singing a different tune. |

I'd say him being from Toronto might bring him down 500K. I'd think the bigger factor is the Leafs are consistently a playoff team, currently in 1st while Montreal seems to still be in between lottery team and wild card.
He might say to himself "a million less per year to play for my childhood team and be in the playoffs every year is worth it".
Or he might not. I just don't see too many teams throwing 3-4 AAV for a guy with 38 career goals and end up where most bottom-six C land at 2/2.5 AAV. - Rare_Jewel
When you're a player that doesn't put up much points that's still a lot of money to pass on. Maybe if he had career earnings over 30 or 50 million it's easy to pass on 500k or 1 m |

I guess we'll see.
Canes didn't just see Guentzel go, they also let Teravainen, Skjei, and Pesce all walk out the door too for nothing and are planning on doing the same with Burns, Orlov, and maybe Roslovic and Andersen this year. |

Hard to be a seller and compete for the cup at the same time. |

He can always make more money. He can't buy a Cup in Toronto.
If Domi signed for 3.75 x 4, I could Evans signing for 2.5 x 4 and still being happy.
I'm not saying the Leafs absolutely must acquire Evans and give him a contract extension to be successful. Just saying, he's an option as a rental and re-signing is a possibility. |

I don't think they were really planning to compete for a cup this year |

Would you take Nylander for Rantanen if you knew he wouldn't re-sign? |

I see and respect your point. I just think it's a below average player having a career year and doesn't move the needle much either way of what we already have. Honestly rather just play Holmberg or Steeves or Minten. Save the assets for a more impact full add imo. |

Yes.
Though I wouldn't be shocked to see an attempt at a sign and trade with Vancouver for Petterson either.

I guess if you're looking at it you kind of go "Would you trade Necas and Drury for that? and if the answer is yes then you do it, right? |

He's lower on the list for sure of guys I would acquire but he's definitely an upgrade over what we currently have. If the Leafs are trying to make a run while the division is having an off year, I see Evans as a significant PK upgrade and offensive upgrade over Kampf and Holmberg. Steeves is an AHLer and Minten is a kid. |

I could see Evans as an AHLer in the Leafs system to be honest. I don't see him offensively better than Kampf or Holmberg but instead right on par with them and both play well defensively.

I'd trade Nylander for Rantanen too if the Leafs had an extension agreed to beforehand.
I don't see Petterson as being good enough this year to make sense for the Hurricanes playoff ambitions though. |

That's a ridiculous statement, he's been an regular NHLer for 5 years.
He has more goals than Kampf and Holmberg combined this season including 3 SHG. |

I'd be very worried adding Petterson long term. Somethings just off with this kid.

He's having a career year. He's marginally better than them offensively at best. He had 7 goals.last year and 2 the year before lol. Hard pass. |

Yes he is but if the Leafs are looking to make a run, I'll add guys having a career year over guys like Kampf, who have been proven to be useless in the playoffs. |

I don't think this year is something the Canes are super focused on anyway.
Nadeau has been on an absolute tear in the AHL since the World Juniors, they've got Nikishin and Morrow ready to step in next season... Personally I believe the real target year is two years from now. |

If the Leafs are looking to make a run they have to get better players than Evans. Guys with playoff experience and success would be ideal. What has Evans proven? Has 1 career playoff goal..hasn't seen the playoffs in about 4 years and never been out of the 1st round. The Leafs need to set the bar higher than Evans or don't bother. We have enough guys on his level already. I want Kampf gone more than any Leaf fan. But not just so we can take a step sideways. Trade him for any pick you cam get, bring in a guy like Nelson or Laughton and giddy up. Somehow get Schenn. now we're talking. |

East is pretty weak this year though. I don't see the point in acquiring Rantanen and Hall unless they were hoping to take advantage of a weaker Eastern Conference. |

I agree but if the Leafs can dump Kampf for a 3rd and get Evans for a 2nd, that's still an upgrade worth pursuing. I'd rather get better players too but if that's not possible, I'll still take an upgrade over trying to go back into the playoffs with Kampf and Holmberg on the team which we all know have proven to suck in the playoffs. At least with Evans, you get a guy having a career year who may be motivated to play for his home town team and give you something extra than what we have. |

Carolina's not trading him.
....probably.
They offered him 8 at $13.5 and he hasn't accepted or rejected it. Who the hell is going to offer him more than that? - BINGO!
Utah or some team who has more cap space than they want and need the cap hit? I mean he's a UFA so he could walk right into free agency if he wanted to - just like Marner.
Maybe they are both thinking the same thing - don't sign first let the other guy and use that contract as leverage in your own negotiations? |
