To be clear in '17, they took Nolan Patrick who had an extensive injury heading into the draft. Groin injuries and concussion issues. Most prospects in rankings get dinged for injury history, David Jiricek comes to mind. For some reason, Patrick avoided that downgrade. Hexy rolled the dice with injury history and failed. Waddell did the same thing with Cayden Lindstrom last season, we'll see how that works out. - Trox88
Hextall made the classic mistake of reaching for need instead of picking the best player. The Flyers needed a center at the time, as they do now, and Patrick was rated the best center on the board. However he had been injured most of his draft year and there were certainly red flags. Hextall went against his scouts and picked Patrick.
As much as Hextall failed, we have to remember in 2015 Provorov was rated by some as the best defenseman in the draft with top pairing potential, and Patrick was 1 or 2 in every mock draft, so to be fair Hextall didn't reach. It just didn't work out which happens when you rely too much on the draft to build your team. |

It will be interesting to see how Buium fits in Minnesota. Faber is only 22. Not a lot of power play time to go around. No insider knowledge but will Buium even sign there? - psuhockey
I'd be more surprised if he doesn't sign his ELC at the end of his collegiate season. The only caveat is Denver may get all the way to the championship again. And the Wild have had a ton of injuries on their blueline this year. I think he fits in nicely on that team. They could have a long-term top pairing of Faber and Buium. |

With NIL the calculus has changed for these top college kids. He can make a ton of money going back to Denver and then choosing where he wants to play after. I am not saying he will do it but the only reason to leave early is to try and get to his second contract as quick as possible. He won’t make a lot on his 2nd contract if he isn’t getting a lot of powerplay time. He could also just follow Carle if he gets an NHL gig.
He will probably just sign after the season. Hockey players inexplicably hurt themselves by not being more ruthless negotiators. Why any player signs a contract into their UFA years is beyond me. |

Nolan Patrick was coming off MCL\ACL issues not concussion issues. There was no head related worries with him at that time - xShoot4WarAmpsx
https://insidetherink.com/nolan-patrick-career/
You would be correct. According to this article, he had a shoulder injury, which he missed half a season in bantam. Sports hernia and Branden and then abdominal surgery right before the draft. I do remember he was having migraine issues identified before the draft. My basic point is any GM who selects a prospect with an extensive injury history adds a layer of uncertainty. Sometimes it works out, other times not so much. Heiskanen was the "consensus" #3 prospect in that draft class with #1 dman potential, but for whatever reason Patrick even with his injury history was ranked higher.

How much cn he make in NIL as hockey much much diff than bball and football.
Is there really a lot of money using the NIL avenue? I do not know. Guys who will start 100% in the nhl can’t see making that much vis NIL |

I don’t know how much hockey players are making in NIL. Would only take one super rich boost. Let’s say about 500k so half his ELC. Does that make picking the team you have to play with until 27 years old worth the wait? In his case Minnesota isn’t a dumpster fire franchise but compared to California where he is from it’s practically Winnipeg.
Again he probably just signs but I wouldn’t. It’s likely the team would trade you where you wanted to go anyway like Adam Fox instead of making you play the full 4 years. |

Risto apparently getting less calls than expected. Looks like Flyers may sell low or wait for the offseason according to Kurz

Kurz is a total hack. I would not put much faith in his “analysis” of anything frankly.

I'm not saying i would have drafted jett at 14 but what i will say is i watch a lot of storm games and don't sleep on jett i think he has a higher ceiling then what's projected - SlNlSTER
I truly hope so. But IMO if he doesn't become an all situation 1C, passing on Buium will forever be a mistake if he turns out to be an all situation 1D.
And yes, I get you can't project the future and maybe it works out. But so far, up to t his very moment, it looks like a mistake.

Not sure what opportunities he could have, but I think he'd probably be better served getting that ELC and burning a year. I believe Logan Cooley had some NIL deals but still ended up signing with Arizona/Utah after his freshman season. Though he waited until the offseason, IIRC.
I also think it differs in Buium's case in that this will be his second season. There have been some cases in the past where players return after the freshman season for one reason or another. If they win another championship, to go along with another WJC gold what more does he have to prove in the NCAA? |

At some point a Team is going to hold the line and make a player play those 4 years or my guess is the rules will be changed next CBA |

Is the media afraid of Torts? I find it interesting on how much credit he gets for team building, but absolutely no criticism for a horrendous PP. Even with the current makeup of the roster, even an average PP probably puts them in a wildcard spot. I chose to give HCs credit when reviewing a players overall stats and he has his best seasons under that HC. Almost all players outside TK had better years after Torts leaves. With the media, he somehow gets credit for the players production after he leaves, when it is just as likely he inhibited that production when he was there. Not doubting a decade ago, he was a very good HC. However, all HCs have a shelf life and the game moves past them. It happens.

They want to keep their jobs and are afraid of not getting access. It’s pretty much similar across all sports now. Once teams learned they could control the media through access they destroyed the whole professional. Now it’s just press releases from the teams or the player agents. |

Yea remember the guy who pissed Torts off with the Hayes Question, Torts refused to answer hios questions and would go on rants against the guy. They need to pick their questions wisely. Doesnt mean they cant ask some hard questions but dont be stupid and disrespectful about it

Its meaningless. They had draft luck in 2017 too. Took the BPA and how did that work out? You cant base anything on a draft pick until you know the result. If Biuim ends up a bust like Nolan Patrick all this female doging and complaining was for nothing - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Lol exactly
Ppl look at draft boards and think you take best player available from the board.
Problem is every team has its own scouting and draft boards that looks completely different at times then what let's say bob Mckenzie board looks like.
A lot of these top analysis, don't go to all these games and watch these players. They have ppl do it for them and give there opinion. And then bob gives out his list on what his guys are telling him |

That's fair, and as Flyers fans we have seen almost all GMs for our organization draft truly elite players fail. Arguably the GM with the best results was Homer drafting Carter and Richards. Clarke drafted Giroux. Maybe Briere bucks that trend, but it is certainly understandable to have doubts. In addition, a GM could trade players in the organization for other players. We'll see if Briere starts going down that route more often. |
