Friedman says Rantanen won't sign a contract extension prior to the deadline... Carolina is in a tough spot now. Rantanen has not been as good as Necas since acquisition and now they risk losing him for nothing.

Rantanen is really damaging himself also. Still a very good player, but it looks like a lot of his success was MacKinnon driven. Not looking like a guy who can dominate on his own. He should have just signed for the $13M Colorado offered.

Him going back on the market definitely helps us.

Not just MacKinnon, but makar leading the transition game and a more sound all around team offensively. I imagine brindamours system is less all star friendly for padding stats.

I watched my first two games in quite a while. How long has it been that Sullivan realized this team has quit on him?

The only bright spot in this dismal season is still seeing Sid so his thing.

LA apparently in on Rantanen... Now rumors of a Byfield trade make more sense.

Mission top 4 pick is still on track, but we could use a good losing streak here. We are 5 pts up in Buffalo with 5 games in hand for the 4 spot. That would give us a 10% shot at #1 and a guaranteed top 6 pick.

Any big trades help us secure that position. Hoping Dubas doesnt wait until the last minute on trades like he did with Jake... He should be first mover on our UFAs like Gryz & Beau, hopefully early this week. Probably get a better return on a Karlsson or Rackell trade closer to the wire when some is left standing at the alter.

With all our draft picks and us continuing our downward descent. I do wonder if we trade up to the number 1 spot if we are close enough to do so. Rantanen is an interesting player. He isn't playing as well in Carolina and has said he wants to test out free agency. I do wonder if either had hurt his trade value a bit.

Yeah, probably depends who has the #1. Sj, Chicago, Anaheim & Nashville would all have a strong bias to Schaffer. Buffalo has Power, Dahlin & Byram already. They would maybe trade down in the top 5, but they would likely put Power or Byram in play for another top 5 pick if they got the #1. I'd consider Power for a pick in the 5-10 range for sure.

Ive lost interest in Rantanen. By the sound of it, he has turned down two teams with 8 year offers in the range of $13M per season. If he wouldn't sign with the Avs or Canes, just can't imagine him signing with us. I actually think it's more likely that he re-signs with the Avs in the off-season than with us.

He wants 14-15 million per season and he wants to test free agency to see if he could get more...At first I was on the we should sign him train, but I doubt we will be the highest bidder. I could see CBJ going all in on him via free agency.

Yeah, someone will pay him. It will be interesting to see how it plays out... is it all about the money, does he want to be the "star" on a team (or does he not want that focus like Malkin), does he want to play somewhere with a beach... who knows but its his right to hold out for what he wants.

I think Anaheim would be a great spot for him. I also think Columbus would be smart to go after him. I keep saying it but Chicago HAS to get someone to play with Bedard or he is going to GTFO of there just like Jones. I got chirped last offseason for saying it was a massive mistake to bring in Hall to be the guy to be a mentor to Bedard, but I was obviously very right.

To me, I think Colorado is still the front runner to get him. He was really sad to be leaving there and Mack is his bud. I think he could be convinced to return and his agent likely gets thrown under the bus for the way things went down.

Why was it a mistake?
