Umm, dubas cleared him out, not a lot to work with.
What do you expect? - Fakepartofme
Cleared him out? Tampa has 2 cups and 1 first round pick in a decade and it hasn't stopped them from being competitive with their core.
Florida traded for Giroux and Chiarot and got NOTHING in return when they walked away and they then went on to win the cup without those assets. Florida had lost those assets BEFORE winning so it wasn't like it got them the cup... let's come off the idea you need a bajillion picks/prospects to make trades.
Dubas traded for half of the best shutdown pair in the league. Drafted Knies, Minten (who was apart of the Mrazek deal) and the leafs have Cowen and Danford as well as assets. Plus some picks.
The cupboards have plenty of options to make moves.
Regardless of the moves made, the core HAS to show up beyond all else. Has to, has to, HAS TO! They will go no where no matter how many picks/prospects they could potentially have to trade. |

While I agree this is how it works. Remember a few years back Bautista being upset Jays didn't improve club much at a deadline.. These guys see their opponents getting reinforcements, it's only fair you expect your higher ups to do the same if you're about to go to war. |

You could ask the same about the Leafs if you want to go “all in” who are they moving because they don’t have a lot of capital that will land a huge “going all in” move.
Are you saying move Minten, Cowan, 1st round pic, Knies?
These are the pieces that would be what teams are asking for to make an all in move IMO. - Cush29
Knies is a guy they would trade FOR so I don't see removing him for almost anyone right now to be an upgrade.
However all of the others are on the board. Including Robertson too. Especially the picks. I would trade picks over Cowan and Minten so the players are more known commodities in development compared to the picks.

But they moved out alot of those 1st after they won cups. Its easy to make moves like that when you've already been to the finals 3 times and won twice. Tre isnt going to sell the farm on a team of "superstars" that have only made it past the first round once.... and he shouldnt.
The leafs have had half their cap tied to 4 forwards....its hindered their success in the playoffs.
No the cupboards dont have plenty of options to make moves...unless you mortgage the future.
IMO, win first...then mortgage the future to win a 2nd/3rd time...dont mortgage it on a team that has won one 2nd round game in 8 years. |

There's a few of them that really need to. I'd love to see the leafs core really dominant a series. Just make it 5 games and move onto the next.

Anyone else feel like the potential fits that we have heard out there for the Leafs are just very medicore?
Laughton is fine, but will only ever have a ceiling of 3rd line centre. No one I have heard mentioned that is realistic feels worth the price. Feels like the Leafs are in for a letdown for either the price they pay, or the return.
Are there any impactful players out there that are being rumored? |

Agreed.
We've only seen Matthews and Marner take hold of one series....and fortunately Vasi wasnt having his best games either. |

Yes yes yes. Post of the year so far. Sick of either going out early or going out in game 7. Just crush a round for once. We've had so many kicks at the can and the best we've done is stay close and get edged out. |

What about the fact "those futures" were used to bring in the likes of McCabe? Would you trade the 2025 first round pick today for McCabe? Sure would. It wasn't wasted.
Dude Tampa traded a 1st round pick and a top prospect (former first round pick Nolan Foote) for a THIRTY point Blake Coleman BEFORE they won a cup in 2020. So no they didn't win first.
You and I can disagree and that's okay but we certainly agree on it doesn't matter if the core doesn't step up. Make the trades, don't make the trades, this will remain true regardless. |

Yeah, it's not looking great, I don't expect anything to massively move the needle. Sure, we can plug some holes and improve the team, make them harder to play against in the playoffs, but there are likely no grand slams left out there.
You have to think there will be at least one move, otherwise why waive Reaves? |

thats backards thinking imo... since you have all 4 signed right now, its time to get them the help to win now.
2 of those forwards may not be here next season.
they have lots of assets to make moves. and they can pivot back to trading players for picks whenever they want.
the future doesnt matter right now, its extremly difficult to build a contender and win.. why half ass it and worry about a 26th overall pick who will play games in 2031

I agree. You can't sit on assets "unless it's a home run trade" in your favour because you can't hit the home run without taking the swing.

Oh I agree, some of them worked out for sure. But most were for rentals that didnt work out or didnt stay.
I said a lot of tampa's 1st were moved post cups. Im not saying they didnt trade a 1st or two prior and Im not saying not to trade first either. Of course move out picks if you are close or have won. Leafs havent been close and they have traded a lot of first already and do not have a 1st this year...so that limits them right now. They need to be frugal is all im suggesting

Walman is a really good dman imo and one that was unexpected. I think its a big trade for them.....or the leafs had they made it. |
