Dallas kind of smart. I mean give up ONE player and futures as they are a top contender. They brought in the biggest needle mover this deadline. Plus if they are signing him while he's in his PRIME. That's excellent.
- Aaron_85

Couple concerns though. Is Rantanen the guyhe was with Mackinnon or is he the guy he was in Carolina? Also, Stankhoven is not a minor loss.

They also have young players to give from the roster because of their drafting.

I'll toss this idea out there. What do you guys think, ridiculous, awful, leafy, fair?

Toronto acquires
Conor Murphy (50% retained via 3rd team)
Ryan Donato

Chicago acquires
Toronto 2026 1st Rounder
Philadelphia 202# 4th Rounder (from Laughton Trade)
Nick Robertson
Connor Dewar
Conor Timmins

3rd Team acquires
Toronto 2025 3rd Rounder
Topi Niemela

- torfc23

Feels like a BIG overpay. Why do we have to give up a 3rd and Niemela for retention?

Carolina definitely messed up acquiring Rantanan.

Carolina definitely did well unloading Rantanan.

If Dubas had traded away a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Nick Robertson and 2023's William Nylander for Rantanen and Hall, he would have been crucified.

When Rantanen wasn't working out, if he traded him away for a 21 year old undersized (5'8 / 165lb) centre who averages 0.5 points per game along with 2 approximately 30th OA picks . . . people would have crucified him again with a rail gun.

The return on Rantanen is not particularly good. It looks good on paper.

Yeah, but he's getting those minutes against other teams' top lines. Playing lower down on Toronto he'll be equally effective.

Still, overpay and highly unlikely Leafs bring in two more players at the last minute.

So something like:

Martin Necas
Jack Drury
2nd ('25)
3rd ('25)
4th ('26)

for:

Logan Stankoven
Taylor Hall
Nils Juntorp
1st ('26?)
1st ('27?)
TBD

A good haul... for a rebuild.

Murphy would be 2.2M retained this season and next. Not sure how much value Niemela has anymore but I think there has to be a sweetener for 2 years of retention in this market.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be happy if something like this happened to the Leafs. But, since they put themselves in that position, they recovered about as well as could be hoped for.

Maybe, He has never reached 20 goals before this year. and he has 23 in 60 games so on pace for 30ish...

Maybe he maintains it but that trade pitch was awful even if he was a career 30 goal guy

I guess the question is, would Donato be more like Hagel or Jeannot after a trade? I'd hope more like Hagel but he very well could just completely dry up on a good team.

The thing is that Hagel was 23, Jeannot was 25.

Donato is 28 and he likely is never going to play as well as he is right now. Before this year he had a career high of 16 goals and 31 points. This year he has 23 goals and 46 points. I'd be shocked if he were able to maintain this level for more than one more year before regressing back into the 25 point range.

He's just a rental. Murphy has one more year left.
