I’ve been reading that the leafs are really working hard to re sign him. I also listened to kypreos on sportsnet. He said the leafs had offered 2 firsts and their top two prospects for rantanen. Minten and Cowan. The reason Carolina went with the lesser Dallas offer was that they didn’t want rantanen in the east conference. - Hextall271
I could have seen a the Leafs sign Rantanen and move on from Marner in the summer. Now, I see that highly unlikely. The Leafs used significant assets yesterday, so to make trades to really reshape the roster will be difficult I expect the band to be put back together again this summer. Maybe Tavares (he'll be 35 in September) goes because Knies is an RFA coming off a good season. |

And that is the exact problem right there. Danny wants to start thinking about spending in free agency with no solid projected 1C for this team anywhere in the pipeline. 1C’s rarely hit the open market and if they do you’re fighting with 20 some other teams for them. What are we gonna do go, over pay Marner and then hope someone will trade a 1C for Konecny? Ain’t gonna happen.
He has to draft or trade for a legit 1C prospect this summer. No more kicking the can down the road or drafting guys we think can be better than their 2C projections. - hereticpride
What are your thoughts on San Jose. Did Grier come out of nowhere or did he cut his teeth under another Gm ? |

We have a 25Th place team in the NHL . We have no #1 C….probably not even a #2. We have no #1 D…..we have below average goaltending. Anyone not named Michkov should have been on table yesterday. The prices paid were rare. I don’t listen to GM speak about what was out there or on the table. What I did hear him say is that playoffs are the goal NEXT year….if that isn’t or this hasn’t been the dumbest rebuild I’ve ever witnessed I don’t know what is. But ya we got a 2027 1rst…excuse me if I’m not overly impressed. - landros 2
No one on the roster changes that. Selling every player we have doesnt change the fact we dont have the assets. Again who are we moving? Seeler, Coots and Sanheim all have NTC
The only players who were rumored to have been asked about are zamula and Poehling. Neither of these two move the needle in terms of return. The Flyers also have 7 picks this draft in the first two rounds. We have enough assets. An extra 5th or 6th round pick is not bring in the pieces we need. The goal is always going to be to get in the playoffs. At the end of they day they arent going to make it. They arent magically going to find the players needed to do so. Comcast will never let the flyers tank. I dont know why this has to be beaten into peoples heads. The only way the Flyers land a 1st overall pick is if they just are a bad team. Briere has said the goal is to make the playofss but what actions has he taken to suggest that really is his goal? He's done nothing but subtract from the team since he got here.
2027 1st round pick not impressive? Are you kidding me? I can guarantee you were probably one of many posters here that didnt think Briere could get a 1st at all for Laughton, never mind a 1st and a good prospect.

Obviously a lot depends on how they do in the playoffs. If they flame out first round again, I can’t see the exact same team coming back. They’ll have to make changes and I think shanahan might be gone.
I was surprised that rr wasn’t dealt yesterday but we’ve jettisoned 3 core players with frost bee and laughts all gone. At least there’s a recognition that those players weren’t helping us move the needle and we cut bait. I feel like it wasn’t great asset management as the returns were underwhelming.
Not sure what the plan is but I don’t anticipate any real help coming from ufa although I kind of expect them to try that route. My hope is that we can trade for the help we need but what will we flip? Draft picks? Luchanko. That might be the pickle we’re in and the only way out is to hit in the draft.

I dont buy it. They dont want Rantanen to go to the east why? They basically folded and waved the white flag for playoffs by moving him. They literally sold at the deadline despite being a contender. Their team got worse. They dont have to worry about Rantanen on Toronto because they aint getting past the first round. They went from a young star in Necas to an Elite player in Rantanen to nothing. What good are those 1sts when those players are 5-6 years away. Aho will be in his mid 30s and their window will be closed at that point. But hey they will get some mediocre players at 27+ in the 1st round right. It makes sense for a rebuilding team to make that move and take the chance, it doesnt for a team with a legit chance to win. The Hurricanes will not win a cup with their current management. You have to have the ability to take risks when you are in a position to win. The Canes do not appear to be able to do that.
If they dont turn around and flip those 1sts in the offseason, that team is done |

Right now. I believe Briere is willing to trade any of the following players on the roster: York, Tippett, Risto, Brink, and Poehling. Obviously, York has the most value. With 7 early picks, does that make some of the prospects available. It should because not every prospect is going to make it. If they get lottery lucky (highly unlikely) then plans will probably certainly change because they are almost guaranteed to get Hagens or Misa.

National TV game. Laughton gone. Kuzmenko gone. I’m expecting a big loss today. |

Just realized this is a national TV game on ABC.
Gotta love being in Seattle and waking up to a 930am start. Watch hockey then have your whole day ahead of you.

A bonus is that they are sinking like a stone in the standings and I could see them picking 6th. They’ll looked completely disinterested the last two games. It’d certainly be nice if we got lucky in the lottery but I can’t see it. I fully expect that the pens will win the lottery. IMHO the only players not avail to be moved (other than those with ntc) are Foerster and mm and I ca. be convinced to move Tyson. |

I also saw it as a weird move by car to even get rantanen but I suspect that he’s hard over that he wants to get to ufa and so they didn’t want to lose him for nothing. They got a good haul. I forgot to mention that the leafs were going to go all in to sign rantanen to the tune of 13 mil aav.

You don’t have to trade everyone….but it’s apparent they aren’t very good. You can keep drinking the orange koolaide all you want….but on a day when the returns were that high I would have liked more. And please enough of the Comcast BS…it’s a cop out every time someone questions an inadequate front office or lack of a coherent plan. As far as whether I thought Laughton would get a 1rst….i think I’ve said multiple times I’ve seen much worse players get that….and I wouldn’t have moved him for less.
I think the fact Laughton got a 1rst shows what the market was….if as as you say “all “ DB has done is subtract yesterday seemed like perfect day to keep doing it….
