I think Drury knew he would likely have to include K'Andre Miller (+) in any size move with Buffalo for one or more young proven RFA's of theirs he was interested in acquiring, in McLeod (C), Peterka (RW), & Byram (D) of key, along with Tuch as a one year from now UFA option.

Drury was concerned for backline size as part of his re-tool plan, and in knowing he would likely have to part will K'Andre Miller in any deal with Buffalo for any of those 3 mentioned RFA's interested in, he took J.T. Miller's recommendation to target Soucy, along with further convincing by J.T. to Soucy as well.

I also didn't recall Nicolas Aube-Kubel with the Caps in last year's 1st Rd. series swept by the Rangers. But I looked it up, & wearing #96 at then age 27, he played in 3 games, (0 pts.; 0-S; 2-PIM; (-1)+/-; TOI-28:05 on 39 Shifts) in total for his 3 games.

The Rangers yielded just 7 total goals, while scoring 15 in that 4 games sweep.
