Not sure what you mean by this. He was a free agent. - Nasty_Duck
Knowing he wasn't going to sign and that he was going to continue playing he should've been moved.

You can't really trade your captain when you had just made it to the Stanley Cup the previous year. They were also in first place that year. So, why would they trade him at the deadline? For what, a 4th round pick?
Covid derailed that season. They also still had intentions of keeping him around but he wanted guaranteed playing time. When everyone in Boston knew that he had lost a step at that point.
Look at the uproar for Marchand, and this team is close to dead in the water. Could you imagine if the Bruins were in a playoff spot and traded Marchand right now? |

The team has now traded 3 captains in my lifetime. So that doesn't ring true to me. I'm in the very small minority for as much I loved Chara...he was an asset like any other. Proper asset management is ice cold and the human factor is removed entirely.

Affirmative.
On 28 March 2018, the Bruins re-signed Chára to a one-year, $5 million contract extension.

You mean like not letting Bergeron play in the last game of the 2022-23 season so he would not get injured just before the playoffs?
Oh wait...

That injury happened in a freak collision with Ullmark...could have just as easily happened in practice. poop happens and Bergy specifically wanted to play with his dad in the crowd for a last game in Canada. |

Think the way he treated long time bruins who epitomized bruin identity ( tough , loyal, no back down, unselfish) does not jell with his TALK of bruin tradition and pride. In other words he is full of sh-t. |

It was a selfish decision which cost the entire team.
Should not have been his decision to make.
In a meaningless game at end of season Bergeron should not have been dressed. It's not like his dad hadn't seen him play in many (hundreds?) of games before.
But that's beside the point - my response was to the "proper asset management" and in this case - it wasn't. |

It's a business - in case you haven't realized that.
You think they wouldn't have re-signed Chara if they really felt he could be useful?
Of the many dumb moves Sweeny has made, this was not one of them.
Get over it.

You just don’t get it. Of course it’s a business but he didn’t give respect to players who deserved better. You flap your mouth but I asked you was zboril better than chara that year ? That was his .
replacement. You tell a player who was a major part of the bruins becoming a prideful tough cup winning traditional bruin team, the captain, that he can’t possibly be a regular . And the reason he can’t possibly earn a spot is Zboril. He wanted him to go and the easiest way was to disrespect him. He knew chara wouldn’t accept that scenario where he is a fringe player. He didn’t want playing time to be decided by who was more effective. So Sweeney is able to say I offered him a contract. BS
You believe Sweeney when he says the door is open for Marchand to come back ?
You believe that he traded him for the good of the organization ? You know couldn’t pass up the great haul he got.
Or did he disrespect him not willing to compromise at a meeting that Marchand called to find a way. He knew that would be it. Now he plays the I sent him where he wanted to go .BS Marchand obviously wanted to stay

Which is poop asset management. Not really sure why this is relevant same as Nasty's comment.

You disagree that's fine but your Bergeron comment is as useless as it is irrelevant. We were talking about Chara's exit and fact there was a missed opportunity to acquire asset(s) you're deflecting with Bergeron playing in a meaningless game. Make it make sense. |

Yes, I'm raging. How are his trade protections irrelevant? Any team could have taken a run at Chara in any of those seasons to sign him as a free agent. He was a unrestricted free agent, but he wanted to play here until it was time to move on.
He was signing one year deals, of which he obviously wanted NMC's. To then ask to trade him at the deadline?
No one makes sense here but you I guess. You know all. He was 42 and essentially a body at that point..
Also, why are we talking about Chara? |

You brought up "asset management" and how the team should be "cold" about it.
The Bergeron situation is another example of that - where the Bruins were not "cold" about it.
And the Bruins never could have gotten anything by trading Chara because they could not trade him. You think he signs with Bruins if there was a possibility he could be traded the same year he signed the ONE YEAR CONTRACT? Not a chance.

If you can better your team you do it. Period.
It's not like Marchand was sent to the KHL. You make it sound like he's the only big-name player ever to be traded. Gretzky. Hasek. Pronger. Shananhan. The list goes on...
GET. OVER. IT.

You love that “get over it “phrase don’t you.
So they made their team better with the Marchand trade . 😂
Still waiting for your response about Chara or zboril his replacement. Guess that made the team better too.
