That's my understanding (I can't find a good source to back me up, though).

I think there's exceptions regarding players in junior and NCAA.

Fun fact: the Leafs could still trade for a player, and have him play in our remaining games. But that player wouldn't be able to play in the playoffs either. The "Trade Deadline" is really just "The Trade Deadline for Playoff Eligibility."

I think if you’re a ufa you have to be signed by a certain date to play the season. I think it’s before the deadline. Kessel was gearing up 2years ago? Practicing with Vancouver but they never ended up signing him but I think it had to be in December. Kind of like nylander a few years back.

Excellent point.

Tampa Bay is +52, best in the division. They could take 1st by the end but have a strong path to pass the Leafs even if they don't.
