That's gonna require the fat, lazy, undereducated Americans to get off their ass and replace imports with domestic production though. The issues they face have nothing to do with unfair trade practices, they have to do with how far the US has fallen behind in so many areas.

Why do you think Japanese and German cars sell so well in the USA and American cars don't sell well in Europe? Because Mercedes and Audi are better than Ford and Chevy. It's really that simple. BMWs are MORE expensive than Ford but they still sell just fine.

Their trade deficits are because they consume more than they produce and sell. The "hard working American" is mostly a thing of the past. The average American is less educated and less motivated than most other places.

Educate your people so your engineers design a better car (or whatever you want to export), and get some hard working people to build it with high quality and high volume, thereby decreasing the price per unit, and these things have a way of solving themselves.

Protectionist policy is just going to reward companies like Ford and GM for making an inferior product, and they'll be less incentivized to build a better product, and they'll fall further behind.

The estimated cost for the big automakers to close their Canadian plants is about $5B. Building new plants in the U.S. to replace the 14 in Canada is estimated to cost almost $30B and will take years. You know what companies looking to make those kinds of investments really hate?
