The estimated cost for the big automakers to close their Canadian plants is about $5B. Building new plants in the U.S. to replace the 14 in Canada is estimated to cost almost $30B and will take years. You know what companies looking to make those kinds of investments really hate? Political uncertainty. The whole idea of the repatriation of American jobs is a joke. - Canada Cup
They won't even bother.
Auto tariffs will kill the North American car industry. They aren't going to make these investments, knowing full well the doors will never open. |

Do you think we can get Mitch to sign for $15Mx8, but write the contract up in CAD and hope he doesn't notice? - Whipper
Well according the main blog it’s super confusing as to why the Leafs even considered Rantanen because Mitch was willing to de-up for the same money (12M) but only NOW is it going to cost the Leafs more to keep Mitch because he’s upset.
🙄
As if the Leafs wouldn’t have already got a ln extension done with Marner if he was willing to take 12M per year. Jesus we would almost all be overjoyed with that. I sure as hell would have been more than ok with it.

Carney only wants to sell fossil fuels if he's in charge of his hedge fund. If he's PM, he wants to tax you into oblivion until you own nothing and his WEF friends are happy. Then China burns 1000 times more coal because nothing is more patriotically Canadian than love for Chinese tariffs. - Rare_Jewel

Yeah his economic policy was so strong it made his own party stage a coup against him.
Turns out, using Autopen to sign all your executive orders, allowing wars to break out everywhere and Alzheimer's is super good for the economy. Especially when that economy is dependent on unlimited government spending and infinite debt. - Rare_Jewel

Personally, I hope they don't shut the plants down.
I'd love to see our own politicians step in with some incentives for some of the German and Japanese automakers to buy those plants (at a discount of course) off the American ones.
I'd rather buy a German or Japanese car anyway. They're way better.
The only thing the Americans make better are pickup trucks. |

Marner made it clear he wasnt talking contract throughout the season. Apparently, the leafs tried to get things going but there was no movement. I dont think the leafs had any intention of moving marner for Rant.....it was posturing IMO. Apparently Canes inquired about Marner very early in the week last week. The Leafs had already moved on to a different offer for Rant on Friday, once the canes settled with Dallas, leafs, desparate to get something done, pivoted and tossed their load at Carlo and a 3rd line center. |

The Canadian and Ontario governments have worked very well together to attract auto manufacturers to our province.
Unfortunately, it won't make financial sense to up production in Canada if you can't sell to the American market. |

Kind of a poor reason to resign the guy I'd think.
From all of this scenario, Tre found out one tidbit of info.
MM has no intention of leaving the TML.
Should give Tre a bit of leverage, I'd think.
Leafs have come to a number to keep him. Ball will be in MM's court.

Agreed. They spent 60 years building an integrated auto sector. They’re not going to tear it down because some clown is using tariffs to, you know, compensate. |

I think another tidbit of info he may have found out was some star players (rantanen) arent worth as much as they may think to other teams? |

Yeah, I don't know enough about auto manufacturing, but I didn't really think of that. Cars aren't exactly the kind of thing that you can profitably make 10 at a time. Even with a borderline free auto plant???
I wonder what the volume required to be profitable is? Because, if they really could have VWs and BMWs made here, with trade wars and such, there is a good chance they could capture the majority of the Canadian market. I wonder if they could start shipping them elsewhere. South America? I imagine Mexico would pretty much own that market.
Also, I wasn't thinking of "upping production", rather just switching one manufacturer for another. |

Maybe but the supply of elite wingers hitting free agency has now been reduced to one. Mitch knows he’s going to get paid after July 1. Is there a number that works for him and Tre before them. |

Giant waste of billions of government dollars to subsidize a Germany company.
That's going to end up like the natural gas plants that got paid to never be built. |

It makes no sense. Rantanen is absolutely not what this team needs. He's 6'4, 215 and has thrown fewer hits than Marner. He falls at the drop of a hat - and if you really want to look at who he compares to on the Leafs - it's Nylander - but with Michael Bunting's balance. I guess if the Leafs just want more straight shooters, then good - but Rantanen doesn't even PK. I don't know.
