as much as he loves the team, the media/fan pressure on this guy is ridiculous also. That might push him away |

No denying that.
Craziest thing I’ve ever seen in my 37 years of being a Leafs fan.
Forever they were saying “Sundin just needs a good winger and they’ll win a cup.”
Matthew’s has the best winger he could ever hope for and the fans treat him like poop. |

It is all his own doing
Marner could’ve been the most beloved Leaf player of all time. All he needed to do was give us a hometown discount. Instead, he gauged us for every last penny (x2)
All of us buzzards would give the Leafs a deal, if we played for them
How much money do you really need?
God knows, he would get lots of CT gift cards and a job with the team after retiring |

Some of it is for sure his own doing some of it Lou and (IMO) a lot of it his daddy in his ear last time telling him to bend the Leafs over and get all he could.
I am hoping he takes what is reasonable and both sides win because he is a hell of a player and I'm also hoping he has a huge playoffs and that debate is put to bed.
All that being said the notion the Leafs don't make the playoffs without him are pure bullpoop. They have more than enough talent and scoring and if they didn't have any one of the players with contracts that are at the 9M + mark I think they would be a playoff team for sure and who knows maybe better.
That includes if they didn't have ONE of the following:
Marner
JT
Matthews
Willy
(Maybe Reilly even though he's not at 9M + he's not value for money this year so far - let's hope he becomes playoff Moe like we have seen before)
I say this because I think they would have been able to use that $ to better balance the team and have added more on D and secondary scoring etc.
Doesn't matter though they have what they have so we can only hope it works "this year". lol

McDavid and Drai both out at least a week. Oilers are in for a bad time. Fortunately, they have Kraken x2 and Calgary next week. Dallas might be a rough one for them. |

I literally think this team could make the playoffs without Marner, even if you somehow weren't allowed to replace him. It wouldn't be pretty, it wouldn't be easy, but it could happen. |

Good lord seasons tickets for the Leafs are wildly expensive (granted this story is about golds but still).
I may have the opportunity to become a season ticket holder for a pair of corner greens. That only if the guy in front me me declines which is the current season ticket holders brother and he's crazy to since he owns his own business and can write some of it off.
This story made me really think "do i really want to do that"?
I'd have to sell A LOT of the tickets - probably to most of the best games to make it make sense financially.
For those here who have season tickets - how many games do you actually go to vs sell?
 - Cush29
Similar to Wedgie ...I divide our set up with some business colleagues and keep about a dozen sets. I go to half and flip the others. Mostly just break even or a few extra bucks while ticketmaster gets richer. (frank)ers ...
Playoff tix leave me impoverished.

10-4 As much as I'd love to go to most of the home games there is no way that's happening from a cost & time perspective as I'm only in the city 1 or 2 times per week to the office and the GO service from Barrie to Toronto isn't great outside am/pm peak yet.
I loathe going into the city if I don't have to most of the time as it is but one day when I'm retired I know I will be able to jump on a GO train at 11am, go hit a 1pm Jays game and then jump back on a train and be home before it's dark and for dinner if I wanted to. That is going to be sweet!
I'd be splitting these tickets up at least 3 ways if not more if I end up with them which is fine. |

Nah, not til he price gouged the Leafs....
....BUT in fairness to Marner, his dad and flossing mom...Lou Lam and his BS no rookie bonus, no moustache, no high jersey numbers, no flossing rules was probably the spark in the greed fire.
Marner should have got a rookie bonus, should be wearing 93 as a tribute number, his mom should still be flossing in the stands and he's still working on the moustache.
Marner should get paid. Period. He is definitely one of the best players in the league and definitely one of the best players to wear a Leafs jersey. |

So cap may now need to come down…
Not to be that guy but told you so! Many argued those new cap numbers were concrete. I told you all it happens every time. They come out with these projections then the actual numbers never get there. Marner may now wish he signed rather than waiting. |

Cap is still going up the announced amount next year. After that, it's a crap shoot. |

Like in any other line of work, the people who are the best in the world get to pretty much write their own ticket. He played hardball to get what he wanted and I have no problem with that but I’m not going to feel sorry for him if the way he handled the negotiations pissed some people off. |

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I'll never fault a player for trying to get paid while they can. It's a 20 year career tops for almost all players. But he already got a monster contract early in his career. We need more Sidney Crosby and Josh Allen types in Leafland

Athletes in their primie rarely ever give "hometown" discounts. Its not much of a thing....except with fans.
Lou screwed him out of bonus cash so he decided to hard bargain with the leafs. Also he was negotiating with dubas....so it was easy pickings.
Nylander didnt leave anything on the table when he his $7.4m per contract, Matthews didnt either.
But i do agree, had he taken a $9 - 9.5m contract, maybe some fans wouldnt be so hard on him
Then again Matthews took over $10m....so marners agent/dad was like "F that" |

Domi flew completely under the radar because of all the activity and noise leading up to July 1 but Max Domi did something extremely admirable last weekend.
He left money on the table to stay in Toronto. In fact, it’s fair to say he took a ‘hometown discount.’
Rielly
Soon to be…JT
The point is that Marner could still become the most beloved Leaf player of all time, if he took a significant hometown discount |
