Gets the primary assists to Nylander getting two hatty’s on the PPs?

Nah, I think Marner only ever wants to play for the Leafs. He stay.
- Whipper

The rift between him and Matthews is revealing itself.

Matthews has yet to prove he’s a leader. The team isn’t really evolving. Mitch was undeniably their best player this year, and he knows his worth.

I really think it’ll come down to Berube. If Craig wants him to stay and thinks he’s worth what he’s asking, then he stays. But there’s no doubt imo Berube loves him.

Hope Marner gets to be a 100pts player finally. The 99 year was brutal to see him get so close.

Willy, Marner, JT, Tenders - all share the MVP this year for sure…also Tanev quietly on the defensive side.

I also believe Marner has a fragile ego - and resents not being viewed as a top player in the league.

He's currently 5th in the league in scoring.

In the past 3 years, he's 12th in points per game, 12th in points.

Just my opinion.

- Atomic Wedgie

I would strongly agree with you that his ego is fragile.

Not sure how he could figure he is not viewed as a top player in the league being an assistant captain in Toronto, being paid what he is being paid right now, all star appearances, endorsement opportunities etc. etc. etc.

As far as 'hate' being thrown his way (someone else mentioned this)- sorry but to be blunt Sac the (frank) up.

You are being paid 10M + per year to perform in one of if not the most intense hockey markets in the world. You (and your team) haven't got it done in playoffs since you have been here - full stop.

If he doesn't want that level of scrutiny that's fine, but then he can't stay in Toronto - it's that simple really because it won't change in Toronto from fans, media etc. Not now, not next year not ever.

Lots of players don't want that - and it's totally understandable - but when your presented with a situation that isn't going to change you can either adapt or move.

His peers seem to be far less upset by the same treatment when they get it (although Matthews never really has) so it's his choice but if he thinks it'll get better there is only one way that happens - Stanley Cup.

If he was a big part of the Leafs winning a cup he'd be put on a pedestal for quite some time but even that has a time clock on it in most cases.

Guess we will see but sure he has every right to be upset or hurt I don't disagree but he is the one who will decide what to do with those emotions as far as moving on to a new place or dealing with them.

I think it does absolutely nothing for his confidence one way or the other.

The "problem" with Marner is the same that's always existed in Toronto with the media, fans and overall market; these guys so desperately want to succeed but are absolutely eviscerated if they lose.

The entire team just grips their stick too tight. They can't play loose or free at any time.

I've made this comparison before, it's like Batman trying to escape the hell hole prison when his back was broken. The only way out is to jump without the "safety" rope. This team (specifically the top-six) needs to be given free reign to just attack, play and be liberated of the preoccupation of "just play safe so nobody gets blamed if we lose".

1. Clearly you have never played any sport at a high level of you don’t think confidence plays a role on the players performance.

2. The actual “problem”, and it’s not just Marner but let’s focus on him for now - Marner needs time and space to make plays. The playoffs take that away in a big way. Marner looks to avoid contact at all costs (probably smart career longevity wise given his size). When the checking gets tighter and the play is allowed to be a bit tougher, he fades. Again, not an exclusive Marner thing.

3. Just cause you’ve made a comparison before, doesn’t mean it gets less retarded if you repeat it…so I guess it’s official - you sitting in mommy’s basement eating your Doritos and nuggies wearing a batman tshirt - such a dork

Bold: not so much. Not as talented (teams) but the Buds under Quinn fell short but had some solid playoff runs and the big players looked pretty good eh…cause their Stars (offensive) were a different type or style of star. Which is what this team needed. All the big guns are the same. A bit on the puffy side and that translates to success regular season but not so much come the post season.

I propose that AA/Tanooki & Rare Jewel should just get a room and let the adults here talk hockey. If a room is not within their financial means the should take it to a virtual room via PM's or perhaps start a Go Fund Me page to raise the funds necessary.

Regardless of which path they take the end result should be a complete cessation of any and all political dialogue in this hockey related forum.

And in case you were wondering, Mikko Rantanen is 8th and 8th.
- Atomic Wedgie

So your saying the trade for Rantenan should have been made?

I just looked up Rantenen on Hocky DB - I didn't know he was coming off back to back 100+ point seasons - wow.

He won't hit 100 this year but he's at 84 now - had he not moved to Carolina I venture to guess he'd have hit 100 again.

Marner has scored 100 points per 82 games 5 years in a row.

The difference is the playoff stats.

Much like Kadri, I'd love to see what Marner would do with MacKinnon and Makar though...
