I never understood why, at the beginning of the season, many pundits seem to have the Oilers penciled in as returning Cup finalists. Other than having McDavid - and that is a real thing - I don't see them as significantly better than the field.

Although I suppose often a team makes a deep run and loses and that experience propels them over the top the next year.

But isn't it just as often that a team makes a final, loses, and that group never does win after all.

Oh if the habs and leafs were the one semi the league could make that work so long as the west was something like LA vs Colorado. The two original teams (with Matthews as you’ve mentioned) along with two American teams to promote.
