No game tomorrow, is that because of the election? - shack67
Maybe because Tampa and Florida are game behind? I don't think election would cause this. |

Berube. What a liar. Must be. No way he could mean this.
“Willy and I have a great relationship, it’s very open,” said Berube. “He comes to me when he’s concerned about things. I think that’s really healthy. He’s a competitor. He loves to score goals but if you look at the game (Saturday) night, I thought he was highly competitive. The puck battles and second and third effort he showed was exceptional.” |

Berube manages like I do. I always talk about my employees positivity in public, but in meetings with the head office I’m saying something much different.
Why would he depreciate Willys value for when he gets traded this summer? |

Yeah it isn't his first rodeo.
There is no way he is happy with the Matthews Marner Nylander who were all afraid to go near the boards. |

Me too but 4 firsts has great value!
Like I said what happens this summer is irrelevant today. Today we need to win in the playoffs. - systemtool
4 1sts might have great value - depending on who you get them from.
I figure for a team to actually make this sort of an offer sheet happen they would need to go in with a price so high that Toronto couldn't or wouldn't match. So the first tier is actually $9.2m - $11.45m and all you lose is 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd.
I love Knies but I don't know if I'd match an $11m contract. These are the teams that have those picks available: Anaheim, Boston, Calgary, Chicago, Detroit, Edmonton, LA, Montreal, Nashville, Jersey, Philly, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Utah and Vegas
Now over $11.45, it's 4 1sts and there's more teams that actually have their next 4 1sts: Ducks, Bruins, Sabres, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Flames, Blackhawks, Avalanche, Red Wings, Oilers, Panthers, Kings, Wild, Canadiens, Predators, Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Senators, Flyers, Penguins, Kraken, Sharks, Blues, Hockey Club, Canucks, Golden Knights, Capitals and Jets
So really the question is which teams have the capspace available and fancy themselves a team that could make some big noise with a guy like Knies? A rebuilding team that has started taking steps who would love to have a young guy come in and join their group? An established team with lower contracts?
So let's say it was a Utah, Anaheim, San Jose or Columbus? There's a decent chance that at least 2 of those 4 picks are going to be high - in the next few years, it's possibly franchise altering high. That said there are other teams who would make moves to have it happen - like Vegas or the Rangers - and those 4 picks could all suck royally.

I think the "threat" of an offer sheet is what a team very interested in Knies would use to push the Leafs to trade him because the Leafs know they'd be better off getting established players than draft picks.
Any reasonable team throwing that kind of money at Knies is way more likely to be past the lottery part of their rebuild and will be pushing for the playoffs. That gives the Leafs a bunch of picks anywhere from 16th to 32nd, all of which give the Leafs next to nothing in terms of immediate playoff performance.
Even in the unlikely scenario a lottery team throws that kind of contract at Knies and remains a lottery team, the Leafs would need to be picking a generational talent 1st overall to get what they need; immediate playoff performance. Hell, we're STILL waiting for our lottery picks to give us playoff success...
We've seen what the Leafs have done with non-lottery 1st round picks in recent years. They would either trade them for rentals or they draft players that bust (best case scenario, they develop way past our current window of opportunity). The Leafs have either traded away or wasted their 1st round pick from 2017 up to 2027. That's a solid decade of 1st round futility. Matthews was the last 1st round pick that had any kind of positive impact on this team in 2016.
The only "benefit" of letting Knies go at that extreme price wouldn't be gaining the picks but rather not having that much money tied up in cap space on another forward that wouldn't even be one of the top-3 forwards already signed to a huge contract. If threatened with an offer sheet, the Leafs might be better off negotiating a trade that gives them 2 or 3 current impact players (3-way deal?) that take up the same cap hit. |

Edmonton deserved the PP earlier in OT. They deserved the W. They completely dominated almost the entire OT. |

The Leafs were never going to sweep every series on their way to winning the cup this year.
But anyone who talks about losing being a lesson or learning experience is daft. This isn’t a developmental league, and they aren’t San Jose. Losing sucks, but there should be absolutely nothing gained from it. It shouldn’t make them try harder, they’ve been around far too long for that type of thinking. When Florida or Vegas loses they don’t think “learn from it.” |

Would a better term be "earned"? Edmonton outshot them 16-7 in the OT when the penalty was called. They had 9 HD chances to LA's 3 at that point as well. They had so much pressure and domination leading up the PP being called that LA was hauling Edmonton players down like it was the 90s. The refs can honestly only let so much go before you have to call _something_.
When Edmonton made it to the finals last year, they played like the team that showed up in OT yesterday. If they can sustain that, it's bad news for the west. I'm not really sold that they can - but the fact that they showed that level of play instead of their listless and seemingly structureless play for large parts of these playoffs is a positive for them and a concern for the Kings.

I'm not sure what the learning experience people are talking about would be.
Stolarz had a pedestrian game - which has been unusual for him - and the team missed scoring the winner by hitting a goalpost with an empty net.
I think most models say that Ottawa had an edge in the play but my eyes said that the Leafs played a very good game. |
