If that being so, can I safely assume that the early Canadiens teams, opposed to the other Montreal hockey clubs, were largely made up of French Canadians?

If not, and the team was comprised of both anglophiles and the French Candians... and maybe a few assorted players from outside... how did the team pick up that nickname, being that it was not strictly made up of Habs?

Is it a tributes such as the 'Blackhawks'?

Since we have so many knowledgable Montreal fans on board, and I am too lazy to do my own research, I thought I'd pose this follow-up question.

I think it's more of a tribute to French ancestory. That being said, the Canadiens did have the inside track on Quebec born players until the first round of expansion in 1967, and the advent of the draft. That probably explains why so many Hab legends (pre-1967) were indeed French.

There are exceptions though, such as Howie Morenz, who was from just outside of Stratford, Ontario.
