Barbie's Birthday
9 March

Barbie Millicent Roberts was born on this day in 1959.

Well, perhaps not born, but she had her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Barbie was invented by Ruth Handler (whose husband Elliot was co-founder of the Mattel Toy Company).

Barbie was actually based on a doll called "Bild Lilli" in Germany. Mattel bought the rights to "Bild Lilli" in 1964 and promptly killed her off.

Barbie's first outfit was a zebra-striped swimsuit; her hair was in a pony-tail. Her boyfriend Ken came along in 1961, but to this day (2006) they have not married.

If you have children, or are one of the over 100,000 Barbie collectors, you can celebrate the day by having an indoor picnic for Barbie.

Rack of Spam

Estimated Prep Time: 10 minutes
Estimated Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients
1 can Spam
Processed Cheese slices

You've got to see this recipe in action to believe it. It's actually very good, especially when you glaze it.

Directions

Open the tin of spam, and turn the chunk of meat out onto a plate.

Make slits in both sides, somewhat deep, but without going all the way through.

Insert strips of cheese slices into the slits.

[Optional: brush with a wash of a tablespoon of water, a tablespoon of vinegar, a pinch of sugar, and a pinch of mustard.]

Bake 20 to 25 minutes until heated through and the cheese has melted; or, if you like it crispier, up to 45 minutes.

Slice to serve.

Pretzel Sunday

15 March

Pretzel Sunday is observed on the third Sunday of Lent in Luxembourg, where it's called "Bretzelsonndeg".

A boy can offer a pretzel to a girl he fancies. If she accepts, the boy can visit her house on Easter, and expect to be given some eggs. In leap years, it is the girl offering the pretzel, and the boy offering the eggs in return later at Easter.

The custom has largely been replaced by Valentine's Day now.

Rhubarb & Ginger Fool

* 650g rhubarb, cut into small pieces
* 1 ball stem ginger from a jar in syrup, chopped, plus syrup to taste
* 1 cinnamon stick, broken in half
* Juice of ½ lemon
* Large pinch of ground cinnamon, plus extra to serve
* 250g very low-fat natural yogurt (we used Onken Natural 0.1% Fat Biopot)
1. Put the rhubarb, ginger, cinnamon stick, lemon juice and a good splash of cold water in a saucepan. Place over a high heat and when bubbling, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes until just tender.

2. Sweeten to taste with some stem ginger syrup. Put into a bowl and set aside to cool. Discard the cinnamon stick.

3. Mix the ground cinnamon into the yogurt. Layer 4 x 250ml glasses alternately with the rhubarb and the yogurt, finishing with a layer of yogurt. Chill for 30 minutes. Top each with a pinch of ground cinnamon to serve
