yea but Gibby left the starters in too long cause he didn't trust most of the pen. Too bad Benoit got injured. |

So with the Royals and now (probably) Indians winning with only 1 good starter and then an elite bullpen I guess the new trend is official set. (frank) starting pitching. |

Teams always seem to win that way. It's just really difficult to predict how good relief pitchers will be or who will stay healthy. |

Outside of a few top end relievers it really is hard to get any sort of year to year consistency from relievers, that's true. |

The year the Phillies won, Lidge never blew a save, Madson developed into an elite setup man out of nowhere, JC Romero was picked up off waivers and turned into an elite lefty out of the pen, and guys like Durbin and Chan Ho Park had great years.
A year later, Lidge had an ERA over 7, Madson was good and the others never pitched well again. |

It'd be interesting to see stats for that type of thing. It really does feel like starters are more consistent year to year once they've had a good season. Is it simply down to sample size only? A hot or cold streak over 60-80 innings will look a lot better/worse than if a starter did that over that many innings. |

I'm very close to switching allegiances to the Indians due to the surplus of "80+ year old senile, near death person attends first Cubs World Series game" - PhillySportsGuy
i dont understand the thousands of fans whooping it up and cheering outside Wrigley behind the Fox post-game panel directly after the last two losses
Chicago is pathetic

Sox had 3 different closers the year they won on 05. Jenks was the man who appeared from the mist and within 2 seasons was last seen walking into the corn rows of Iowa.
In the playoffs 150 yr old Jose Contreras was unreal.

I imagine it's sample size. You're comparing 70-80 innings to 200+ innings. Relievers are also more reliant on 1 pitch, so if it begins to go, they really struggle. Starters have normally developed 3-4 pitches and can work around a breaking ball that doesn't break as much or a fastball without the same kind of rise to it.
Those are just guesses though. |

Seems like they only care about the Cubs. Whenever I bring up the Blackhawks or Bulls to a Chicago fan, they just shrug their shoulders. Two (frank)ing dynasties wasted on that stupid city (Sorry Gramps). |

It's just so unpredictable. There are only a handful of relievers who pitch really well for 5 straight seasons. That's what made Rivera so special. |

To an extent. The Bulls have sold out every game since the Jordan era. Which is pretty amazing considering it was almost 20 years ago and there have been some lean years.
The Hawks lost countless fans due to a pigheaded owner who refused to change with the times. For a period of about 25 years or so, the Hawks were the hardest ticket to get in town. While every owner with a scintilla of a brain was making their product more accessible he made it even more difficult and expensive as attendance dwindled. This is no joke. People celebrated when they heard old man Wirtz died. There are still tons of fans around who understand how special the last 8 years have been as a Hawks fan. The rest are new and think this is a common occurrence. LOL

I was shocked they won one too. It was definitely a huge burden lifted.
Yeah, there's no way the Flyers win a cup. Partially because they'd never suck long enough to accumulate a bunch of Crosby/Malkin/Kane/Toews types in a row. |
