Vance Worley had a long leash for one very obvious reason: When the Phillies bullpen gets involved, bad things usually happen.

So manager Charlie Manuel played the percentages, which tells the story of a team that desperately needs its starters to pitch more than six innings.

The plan, as well intentioned as it was, backfired Friday.

Even after Worley already had allowed the tying run to score, even after he loaded the bases twice after allowing two walks and two singles, even after he had thrown 105 pitches and was clearly gassed, Manuel left Worley in.

What transpired was devastating.

Seven-hole hitter Brandon Crawford drilled Worley's 0-1 offering out for a grand slam — the second of his career — that gave the Giants a four-run cushion and paved the way for their 7-2 win at Citizens Bank Park.
