PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard has a meniscus tear in his left knee that will require surgery and keep him out 6-8 weeks, general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. said before Monday night's game against the Washington Nationals.

According to Amaro, the condition from his MRI in May worsened. Six weeks ago he only had fraying of his meniscus.

"I'm encouraged," Amaro said. It would have been much more significant damage. We know it's treatable."

Amaro said the tear is similar to what catcher Erik Kratz had in mid-June and he is starting his rehab tonight for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs and is back sooner than expected.

he's got decisions coming up that will decide his fate in philadelphia.

by this time next year he will either be looked at as having righted the ship for the future or he will be looked at by the houston astros scouting staff and asked if he could run this envelope down to the mailroom and grab us some coffee on the way back.

woulda been a better video if the bat killed the mets fan.

actually the video sucks and isn't even worth a site putting up. don't watch it if you haven't already. it's a bat going into the stands and bouncing around and then right into the arms of a phillies fan who actually does spill his beer even though apparently a big part of this astonishing highlight video is that he "doesn't spill beer in process". also, there are no "impeccable reflexes" involved. if dude doesn't catch it it will basically bounce off him and land right in front of him.
