I'm not sure what he's getting at. That Anderson was out for personal reasons? I suppose they could have used their AHL guy.

I don't know though, Hammond was a fluke run for them. Condon has been better. Maybe he falls off the map just like Hammond.

I mean, I know what you're getting at, but given that they're not going to give up for the time being, they needed a goalie to plug a hole. Giving up a 5th to do so isn't a big deal.

They've done lots of stupid things, that are going to bite them in the ass in the future. But picking up Condon isn't really one of them.

If they ran out and picked up Ryan Miller or something, THAT would be a (frank) up of colossal proportions.

If Anderson was out for a while... does going with Hammond/Condon really make much difference over Hammond/Driedger or whoever they called up.

We lived through a decade of "who cares its only a 5th" type moves...glad its not the leafs anymore

anytime you can give a former 1st rounder away for nothing, you got to make that move.

I figured no one would be dumb enough to take Cowen, Greening and Michalek.

The leafs are paying those three, plus Gleason & Laich (in addition to Kessel) a total of $18.23M this season.

Kessel gets paid another $4.8M in the future ......... that's just over $23 Million for players, that will not play for the leafs ............ ever.

That's

- D0PPELGANGER

One team pays cash to free up cap, the other gives up cap to free up cash.

Different teams, different priorities.

One team wants the flexibility to build a cup contender, the other wants to save money for... I don't know... another Spartan opening ceremony?

What are your thoughts on a team, that is bound to run into mega cap issues in a few years, paying $1.2M for a winger on another teams, this year and the following four seasons?
- D0PPELGANGER

At least our "cap issues"will be paying for good players.

You only wish Ottawa had enough talent to worry about cap issues. When you can afford to throw money away on a Phaneuf, it speaks volumes about the value of the other players on your team.

I'm not saying I agree with the approach. if I were in charge of the sens I'd tear the whole thing down and start over.

I'm saying that they are trying to win games. if you just take that for what it's worth, I DO think Condon probably gives them a couple more wins this season over the other two, and if you just accept that they are in win now mode now matter stupid that is, then yes, you make that trade. it's a 5th round pick for what is likely 2 or 3 more wins, especially in that circumstance, and (again, if you accept that they're in win now mode, no matter how stupid) they need every win they can get.

Agreed. The problem with the Sens is that they're trying to win while being cheap. Win now but with poop players. But I disagree that Condoms give them better chances to win than Hamburgers.

nope I know what happened... a panic move by a team what has to win now
- senstroll

So it's a "panic move" when your Starter could be have been out indefinitely, for family reasons, at the time of the acquisition, and the Back up is injured in the next game ................ to go out and trade for a goaltender with NHL experience.

I think you're the only one who is framing the Sens as a team "that has to win now" ............... why do you think that is the case?

what???, whoa. if you don't think the Sens are doing their best to compete now, youre out to lunch.

trading youth for veterans.
trading draft picks for veterans. they're already down to 5 picks in 2017 AND 2018. with both second rounders gone. they're already dealING picks for 2018!!!!
one of the oldest teams on average in the league
bottom of the barrel prospect group

as I said to the other dude, if you accept that they're in win now mode, the trade was good. bit you have to accept that first.

because a rebuilding team uses anderson being out as an opportunity to give their developing goalies a chance.

the organization is doing everything possible to try to scrape into the playoffs, and have no issues sacrificing future right now. it's plainly clear.

Anyone with a modicum of hockey knowledge (which is most of us here) knows there is little chance of the the Senators "winning now" ............ they're at least a season, probably more, from being a playoff team.

It's all you leaf fans that are framing this year's team as a "win now" team, not any Senator fans.

Ottawa's "odds" to win the Cup this season, currently sit at 45/1, so if your (leaf fans) mind(s) think that's the mark of a "win now" team, then there is no point in trying to debate the issue.

You've all interpreted a trade or two, such as the Phaneauf trade last season, as meaning it's a "win now" trade, and that was last season.

These trades for older players were done for other reasons at the time, and with a longer time line than "win now".

Hahahahahahahahhahaha. they're desperately TRYING to win now. it's nice that you know they won't but the organization is clearly trying to. melnyks keeps firing coaches because he thinks he has a team that can win and the coaches aren't succeeding at following through with that.

teams that think they can compete trade picks for veterans to push themselves over the top. Ottawa, as shown, is gutting itself of draft picks for players at the end of their prime. it's blatantly clear what is happening.

if they were not trying to win now the phaneuf trade absolutely does not happen. they wait until the short term crap comes off payroll and replaces it with a better young player. they don't take on longer term crap because it helps the roster a little bit now.

He’s not wrong though.

Acquiring mediocre veterans results in a mediocre team, not a winning team.

So the sens aren’t really in win-now mode. but they are not in build for the future mode either. I think senseless mode is where they are at.

Other than not trading their first away (yet), the season will be a complete waste for both the long and short term.

Can all the leaf meannie fans stop framing a trade as win now. The sens fans don't beleive that and never said such nonsense.

Ottawa management believes they have a contending team. I believe the same. They were solid last year until Turris was hurt. Love the pairing of Ceci and Phaneuf and I expect the Sens to shave 20 goals against off of last year.

Brian Murray has a history of building teams that become super competitive the year after he steps down as GM (Detroit, Anahiem).

- spatso

Guy Bouchard coached both Brassard and Hoffman in junior. I think this trade has Bouchard's fingerprints all over it. I think he wants to build the best power play possible around Karlsson. Brassard (left shooting passer) and Hoffman are key pieces in that plan.

Short term Ottawa is better because of this trade. Long term I think Zibanejad still has a strong upside. But Dorion is very high on Colin White and Logan Brown and it could be that he does not see Zibanejad growing into the #1 role.

As frustrating as Zibanejad's puck management can be there are times that you think he can be an outstanding player.

Love the addition of Brassard another local player (like Pageau, Methot and Borwiecki). But sorry to see Zibanejad go.

- spatso

Crazy talk.

Dorion has added Chris Kelly and Brassard. Clearly he wants a stronger veteran presence in the middle. Ottawa plans on building this team around Karlsson and making a run now.
