Getting veterans for younger players and assets. Trading picks and prospects for immediate help. Isn't that pretty much the only definition?

Overpaid players aren't a big deal in Ottawa as long as the remaining salary is less than the cap hit. You know being cheap and all that.
- daeth

So it would be better if the Cap hit was lower, and the actual salary was higher, even though there are only two teams with lower Cap hits (in total).

Great time in general for the city of Ottawa. CFL champs and weekend hockey sweep. Hat trick weekend complete. Hats off to Ottawa. Enjoy the good times.

After 22 games last season, the Sens had 29 points ........... the same number as this season (after 22 games) ....... with the only difference being 2 more Wins than last season ................... 4 loser points last season, 1 loser point this season.

Still 3/4 of the season to go, so I am not one to count the chickens before they hatch.

They're heading out on a tough road trip (next week) Pitt/SJS/LAK/ANA, and how that goes will really tell me if the "new system" has made a difference or not ............ so far there are signs of improvements, but the PP% is still way way to low and needs to improve sooner rather than later.

Well aside from cap issues and personal issues can you site why trading young players, picks and prospecs for guys in their 30s or soon to be, means something other than trying to win now?

And, as soon as Turris was hurt last year the Sens started getting ripped playing their run and gun style.

Karlsson believes in this system and he goes after the guys who are not pulling their weight. Not nearly enough credit is being given to the leadership group for making the new system work.

I also think a lot of credit has to be given to Phaneuf and the role he plays in supporting Karlsson both on and off the ice. Have noticed that Boucher often starts Phaneuf and Ceci against the other teams first line.

Al McGuire (the college basketball coach) called the last 10 minutes of any game at any level "showtime." He thought the job of the coach was to keep the game close until then, keep your star players fresh and then cut them loose so your stars can be stars when it really matters. A fresh Karlsson and Turris in the third period and especially overtime has been very, very good.

I hear the Sens are going to raise a banner in honour of "their" grey cup victory.

Expect Spartans.

Sens have a history of honouring another franchise's history as their own.

Not even sure how that's in question.

So many teams were signing players to contracts that had lower cap hits than their real salary, that the NHL had to make multiple rule adjustments to weed it out.

However, for the Senators, a team that has no cup ambition, and only exists to fund Melnyk's extended vacation... taking other team's high-cap players with lower actual salaries makes sense, as Dopps has argued in the past.

I've asked the question of some fans of other teams. so far, the Columbus Blue Jackets prefer David Clarkson and his contract, not playing, to Bobby Ryan and his.

do tell.....how do they "honour it as their own"?

either they honour it.....or they claim it as their own.

by hanging the banners they are honouring the memory of a past franchise, not claiming it as their own.

well done though, just adding to the pathetic troll attempt. keep it up

I think every contender would agree with that thought.

Now if you're on a budget and don't plan on spending anywhere near the cap ceiling then Ryan would be the better choice.

you can't "honour something as your own".....they're honouring an old franchise, not claiming their titles as their own.

you tell us all the time how awesome and successful you are, thought you'd be smart enough to figure that out......

ahh, I see, it's the last part of his statement you take issue with, not the whole thing.

Sometimes it's hard to decipher what people less intelligent than yourself are trying to articulate.
