I always love the games where announcers marvel at Karlsson's skills, this year they are responding to his defensive talents. Then we get up and get to read Prock and wonder what the game day announcers must be missing.

Suppose we won't hear much from the koolaid gang. Not a good week for the blue and white. They are doing the anticipated December collapse and sinking in the standings and it is just started to resonate in for some of the fans.

All teams, throughout the course of a season, play a few games that they were totally outplayed, but still managed to win, and an equal number of games that they lose when they totally outplay the other team.

This is normal for all teams, and not unique to one team.

Post all the fancy stats you want, but until the NHL changes the way the award points after a game, it's still all about wins, losses and ties (loser points).

Ottawa currently sitting with the 8th best record in the NHL at .630
toronto currently sitting with the 23rd best record in the NHL at .500

Maybe some of the fans, but not the leaf players and some of the fans too I suspect.

The Maple Leafs find themselves three points out of a playoff spot through 20 games this season, but the sense in the dressing room is the team is well positioned. "We're right where we want to be," said centre Nazem Kadri, who's tied for the team lead with eight goals.
"We're very much in the hunt." So, he sees playoff potential? "I don't see why not.

there is no sinking feeling in our stomach. the Leafs youth played a phenomenal game last night. they very much dominated. dubnyk played out of his mind.

this year is not about the number of points the Leafs accumulate. we are not contending. no team in the province is. this year is about growth to us, and we are very happy with what our kids are showing.

Ottawa has now beaten the Sharks in their last six meetings, if I heard correctly last night on the radio.

THW Three Stars

First: Erik Karlsson (goal, two assists)

Second: Mike Condon (35 saves, .946 save percentage)

Third: Jean-Gabriel Pageau (goal, assist)

I had to explain this to another leaf fan, who is also putting forward the false narrative of Ottawa being in a "Win now mode" A.K.A win the cup this season. I guess you didn't comprehend the post when I set him straight and he had to start immediately backpedaling and explaining what he really meant.

Ottawa is NOT in "win now mode" ....... they're in a "make the playoffs mode" and the GM said as much at the beginning of the season.

But don't take my word for it, just read what the Senators GM said back in October

As the Senators prepared to hit the ice for the first time as a team on Tuesday, GM Pierre Dorion dropped by the dressing room to address the troops and outline his expectations. The season gets underway with the Battle of Ontario against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night at the Canadian Tire Centre.

After missing the playoffs last year and then making plenty of changes — including the hiring of coach Guy Boucher and acquiring centre Derick Brassard from the New York Rangers — the Senators are determined to get back to the post-season.

Nobody thinks the sens are in win the Stanley cup mode. As long as melnyk owns the team, they will never be.

The sens are in scrape into the playoffs mode. Everybody knows this.

By season’s end, they’ll be an 85-95 point team; bounced in the 1st round if they happen to get in.

That is far more positive and realistic.

It can be great fun to see a young team grow itself into a contender. I think the Leafs are going in the right direction. In a few years they will compete for a playoff spot.

This is from an important TSN column by Gary Lawless. TSN editors are setting up a language transition for the world juniors and the 2nd half of the season where they will make a shift and start giving top billing to Laine's remarkable season. This is not insignificant as it is the first time TSN has come up with an above the fold story declaring Laine as the top pick of the draft. The fact they used a Winnipeg writer to do the story in the way they have suggests to me that want to hype Laine and his remarkable World Junior tourney last year.

"To this point, Laine has shown he can elevate to a place Matthews may not be able to reach. Matthews has been a four-star player – literally with a historic four-goal debut and metaphorically – but Laine has shown us moments of five-star excellence. There’s no reason to believe we won’t consistently be awed by Laine’s abilities and achievements. Matthews can do a lot. Laine can do more."

Still does not change the fact that Matthews was going to be selected first overall regardless of who won the Draft lottery. First line Centers are a valuable commodity, and no one trades them once they have them on their team. You have to draft and develop them.

You're beating a dead horse here, and will never convince anyone that the leafs made the wrong choice ............ no team would have passed on Matthews unless they already had a bonafide number one center in their system, like Edmonton for example.

trash article.. click bait waste of time

someone could just as well write and article saying Matthews has the underlying numbers that are sustainable and dominant, Laine is riding high sh% and unsustainable luck that nobody in the history of the NHL has ever sustained.

I would close out with ... Who do you want Toews/Kopitar dominance and cups or Ovechkin/Kovalchuck flash with No cups

thats also trash though

I think those are valid points. And, they certainly reflected my opinion before the draft. The writer (Lawless) also agrees with the point and does not diss Matthews in any way other than his stressing Matthews as a 4 star player and Laine likely a 5 star.

Yes or No?
